1. PhD Position in Aerothermodynamics of the breakup of objects entering the Martian atmosphere

Summary of PhD Positions:

Mars entry is interesting to both those designing planetary missions and to those studying the formation of the solar system. Martian entry results in extreme aerothermodynamic loads, which can result in breakup. This project will extend our abilities to study these complex multiphysics phenomena. The Martian atmosphere is predominantly CO2, challenging the laser-based diagnostics used in hypersonic wind tunnels, which have been designed for air flows. This project will develop a new method using PLIF for measurements in CO2. The break up will also be visualised using high-speed resonantly-enhanced shearing interferometry, and compared with simulations of the fluid-structural interactions occurring.

2. PhD Position in Aerospace Vehicle Structural Health Monitoring with Acoustic Emissions and Acousto-Ultrasonics

Summary of PhD Positions:

Smart materials and structures are essential to ensure the safe, efficient, and effective operation of assets such as aircraft. The concept of structural health monitoring is to give a structure a central nervous system such that it is capable of sensing, detecting, and monitoring its own health and reporting that for human intervention (such as maintenance activities for an aircraft), or in the far future, to activate automatic or autonomous repair systems and technologies. In this project, the use of acoustic signals (specifically ultrasound) will be used to assess and characterise damage in various materials and structures (composites, aluminium etc). These signals can be acoustic emissions from cracking or impacts, or they could be acousto-ultrasonic signals actively generated in the material/structure by an actuator.

3. PhD Position in Advanced Modelling and Data Analytics in Aviation

Summary of PhD Positions:

The big data revolution is ubiquitous across all industries, and in aviation, big data is also crucial. While many other industries are seeing a great deal of academic research utilising machine learning and other tools to analyse data, there have been limited applications in aviation. The goal of this research will be to look at data driven decision making and other applications of big data in a specific application to the aviation industry. Applications may be in terms of safety data analytics, aviation econometrics (airport or airline modelling and forecasting), or sustainability (emissions or resource utilisation). The tools available span all data analytics, with options to look at systems dynamics to look at modelling and simulating complex aspects of the aviation industry, or they could be modelling and forecasting using machine learning tools such as neural networks.

4. PhD Position in Adaptive modal superposition mirror

Summary of PhD Positions:

Traditional adaptive optics (AO) deformable mirrors use segmented actuator patterns requiring elaborate manufacturing techniques. The range of surface curvatures used for corrective action can be described by Zernike polynomials, which are a sequence of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. The vibration modes of a circular membrane exhibit striking similarities to Zernike polynomials; it fact, they can be all expressed as functions of Bessel functions. This leads to the possibility of using a vibrating membrane mirror in adaptive optics. The objective of this project is to design, manufacture and test a modeshape mirror capable of reproducing the essential Zernike polynomials to be used in adaptive optics.

5. PhD Position in Adapting games to human mental resources

Summary of PhD Positions:

Engaging in a game can be mentally demanding. It is difficult to estimate the long-term impact of mental load of the gaming experience. This project will develop artificial intelligence models to extract cues of cognitive load and use these cues to adjust and adapt a game to maintain and sustain a healthy gaming experience. Cognitive load is defined here as the rate of depletion of mental resources as a player engages and plays a game.

6. PhD Position in Acoustic Metamaterials and Metasurfaces

Summary of PhD Positions:

Acoustic metamaterials are artificially structured media which can manipulate sound waves in unusual ways. Metasurfaces are thin layers of metamaterials, which enable wave manipulation within a compact structure. This project can encompass experimental, theoretical and numerical approaches. A key area of interest is metasurfaces for acoustic waves in air. This will allow a number of practical acoustic devices to be designed and characterised, including lenses, beam steerers, absorbers and cloaks. Similar concepts can also be investigated for vibrational waves in solids.

7. PhD Position in Accurate prediction of gas-surface catalysis through quantum mechanics

Summary of PhD Positions:

Gas-surface catalysis is vital to modern technological society, but is often poorly understood. This project will develop methodology to predict the outcomes of gas-surface reactions by detailed simulation. We will use recently developed methods for performing quantum dynamics calculations using Gaussian basis functions, along with new developments in potential energy interpolations. Uniquely, the effect of the temperature of the catalyst is included in the method. The project will enable the rational design of catalysts through accurate, temperature-dependent prediction of catalytic activity. Many variations to the project are possible depending on the interests of the student.

8. PhD Position in A Cognitive-Based Training Approach to Improve Novice Pilots’ Risk Management Behaviour

Summary of PhD Positions:

Risk management is one of the most important skills that pilots are expected to acquire to ensure the safe and successful management of flight. The main aim of this project is to develop a new approach to pilots’ training which emphasizes the integration of new material derived through direct experience into pilots’ behaviour and to test the utility of this new training method for improving novice pilots’ risk-management behaviour (i.e., decision-making). Crucial to this is understanding the cognitive mechanisms that facilitates skill development.

12. PhD Position in Artificial Intelligence to Uncover Fish Responses to Disturbed Flows

Summary of PhD Positions:

The mechanisms of aquatic animal swimming become a central issue for researchers and engineers who wish to develop underwater robotics with superior locomotion capability. Aquatic animals suspended in water are subject to the complex nature of three-dimensional flows, which have the potential to perturb the swimming motions of the animals. One of the most fascinating yet least understood attributes of aquatic animals is their ability to rapidly adapt their motions to complex flows and environment changes. In this project, we would like to apply/extend AI to uncover fish fast gait transitions and fish responses to disturbed flows, and to discuss the associated flow physics.

13. PhD Position in Antennas in dissipative media

Summary of PhD Positions:

The application of modern telecommunications networking protocols and inexpensive electronics has created a new paradigm for underwater (sub-sea) communications, with many potential military, scientific and commercial applications. Systems using radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic wave propagation offer a solution to some of the limitations of underwater acoustic systems. However the correct specification and design of the underwater antenna is essential to achieve the desired performance with an RF underwater system. Additionally, body-worn or invitro antennas experience a similar dissipative electromagnetic environment, hence the scope of this project isn’t necessarily restricted to sub-sea applications. This project will investigate the fundamental behaviour of insulated and bare conductors immersed in a dissipative medium, and develop a quantitative understanding of the reactive and radiated field coupling mechanisms between antennas in a dissipative medium.

14. PhD Position in Analysis of bulk organic explosives for forensic laboratories

Summary of PhD Positions:

Analysis of bulk organic explosives is a straightforward task for well-equipped forensic laboratories, but it is more difficult for them to analyse trace amounts of organic explosive residues; this usually requires an elaborate sequence of solvent extraction from swabs and some form of chromatographic or electrophoretic separation. Suitable detection techniques include ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), mass spectrometry and thermal energy analysis, however, such analytical systems lack the sensitivity to analyse explosive residues in vapour samples because of the very low vapour pressures.
