4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Evolutionary Genomics
Summary of PhD Program:
Structural Variants (SVs) encompass a broad variety of (macro-)mutations from hundred nucleotides up to large parts of chromosomes (e.g., large-scale deletions / duplications, inversions). SVs are so common in eukaryotic genomes that the amount of genetic diversity they explain is higher than that explained by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). However, mainly for technical reasons, SVs have so far been little studied and our understanding of key evolutionary processes is therefore incomplete. For instance, little is known about the mutation rates of the various types of SVs, their segregation patterns, and how recombination is affected nearby or within them. Similarly, little is known about the distribution of their fitness effects. This knowledge is much needed to understand the evolution of SVs and genome evolution in general.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Organoid Modelling of Intestinal Epithelial Bacterial Infection
Summary of PhD Program:
The mission of SurfEx is to unite academic and non-academic partners and develop new insights into the formation and functioning of epithelial tissues in health and disease. The top (apical) side of epithelial cells is responsible for the exchange of materials with the outside environment, but also for preventing unwanted microbes and other damaging agents to reach deeper tissues. The formation of a functional apical exchange surface requires complex rearrangements of the cytoskeleton, the formation of surface features like cilia or microvilli, and correct molecular specialization (proteins, lipids and carbohydrates). Within SurfEx, research in small model organisms will be combined with novel 3D tissue culture models to unravel the molecular mechanisms that establish a functional and selective apical exchange surface.

24. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Mechanics, fracture modelling of batteries
Summary of PhD Program:
In service, significant deformations develop in lithium-ion battery electrodes during cycling, resulting in microscopic cracks leading to decreased capacity and battery lifespan. The understanding of why, where and how these cracks develop and grow is limited. In this joint research project, conducted at the interface between mechanics and chemistry, we use multiphysics computer models to study deformation mechanisms in battery electrodes, supported by highly resolved synchrotron X-ray CT crack experiments. The project is expected to increase the understanding of battery cracking and its dependency on electrode morphology, particle positions and electrochemical cycling, and open for a design change of the electrode microstructure to increase batteries capacity and lifespan. The project is thus a vital contribution to the development of tomorrow’s batteries.
