4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biological Physics MPRG Zwicker

Summary of PhD Program:

The research group aims to understand how biological organisms organize soft material. They currently focus on the organization principles of liquid-like droplets in biological cells, but they are also interested in broader questions in biological physics. Their work generally combines analytical insight from simple systems with more detailed numerical simulations to unveil biological design principles. Additionally, they build tailored models to interpret experimental data of collaborators.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in biophysics

Summary of PhD Program:

A large fraction of our research centers on deformability cytometry (DC), a high-throughput microfluidics-based imaging technique for cells. With DC, we can rapidly measure vast numbers of cells, identify cell types (e.g., in blood), and characterize them optically (via their bright field image structure) and mechanically (via their deformation due to microfluidic shear stresses). In proof-of-concept studies we have demonstrated that DC data signatures are sensitive to pathological changes during diseases.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Specificity mechanisms of ubiquitin ligase complexes

Summary of PhD Program:

Our laboratory aims to understand how the posttranslational modifier ubiquitin regulates myriad aspects of eukaryotic physiology. A major key lies in the action of ubiquitin ligases, a highly diversified enzyme class that recognizes specific substrates for ubiquitination and determines the types of modifications they are decorated with. The immense potential of ubiquitin ligases for therapeutic applications has been illustrated by the clinical efficacy of immunomodulatory drugs in the treatment of hematological malignancies and recent advances of Protacs/molecular glues. Yet, efficient targeting of ubiquitin ligases in the clinic is still hampered by our limited understanding of their structural mechanisms and integration into cellular pathways.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Metalloenzyme-related inorganic spectroscopy

Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Inorganic Spectroscopy at MPI CEC provides a unique environment, which brings together state-of-the-art experimental approaches with theory to understand challenging questions in energy research. The appointed researcher will be involved in biochemical and bio-physical experiments and spectroscopic characterization (including EPR and X-ray spectroscopic techniques) to elucidate the mechanistic pathway of enzymes like soluble Methane Monooxygenase (sMMO), Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenase (LPMO) or Nitrogenase. The researcher will also take part in analyzing data and preparing scientific publications.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrical Engineer or Experimental Physicist with a focus on real-time control systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe with about 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which – like the sun – generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future. The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers within the division E1 a position for a PhD electrical engineer or Experimental Physicist with a focus on real-time control systems (m/f/d) as part of its program for the promotion of young scientists.

10. 03
Fully Funded PhD Position in Hidden Heritage of the European Union

Summary of PhD Program:

Conventional accounts of European integration have often insisted on the novelty of the supranational law developed in that context, asserting its ‘sui generis’ character and highlighting its differences with earlier forms of international and regional integration. However, recent scholarship has questioned this view, noting that forms of supranational law and institutions already existed during the interwar period. This was the case within the League of Nations and its broader context, which included international(ized) institutions both in Europe (e.g. Danzig, Saar, Upper Silesia…) and in (semi-)colonial settings (e.g. League mandates, international cities, protectorates…).

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in History of European Union Employment Law

Summary of PhD Program:

The Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt/Main is a world leading research institute with a staff of more than 150. Its three departments with more than 70 scholars, the unrivalled collections of its specialized library and its numerous national and international co-operations make it the central research hub for a global scientific community investigating the past, present and future of legal regimes. We are now looking to recruit for 1 October 2024, or sooner a Doctoral Student (m/f/d) for the Fellowship project ‘The History of European Union Employment Law’, under the supervision of Professors Thorsten Keiser and Stefan Vogenauer, dealing with the following topic: Equal pay in the Benelux countries in light of European law (1952-1973).

12. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in The Evolution of Behaviour in Darwin’s Dreamponds

Summary of PhD Program:

One of the most enduring questions in behavioural ecology is also, deceptively, one of the most simple; how does behaviour evolve? Despite a rich history of comparing morphological traits in evolutionary studies, our ability to measure and compare behaviour is complicated by the fact that behaviour has not only a ‘form’ (i.e. a physical structure) but also a function (i.e. the effect on the world), and the link between form and function can vary broadly depending on context. The Behavioural Evolution Lab at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior seeks to overcome these barriers through a combination of in situ field studies and emerging computational approaches to behavioural quantification and analyses.

13. Several Fully Funded PhD Position in Interfacial Ionics Group

Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Interface Science www.fhi.mpg.de/isc-department headed by Prof. Beatriz Roldán Cuenya at the Fritz Haber Institute carries out cutting-edge research on advanced functional materials with applications in heterogeneous catalysis, energy conversion and electrochemistry. By combining unique synthesis methods, state-of-the art tools for experimental characterization and advanced approaches to data analysis, atomistic details of thermal catalysis and electrochemical reactions at gas/solid and liquid/solid interfaces are revealed. In particular, structure-reactivity correlations on nanostructured materials can be established, paving the way for the rational design of novel catalytic materials.
