12. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

HSCs represent the most therapeutically exploited adult stem cell compartment, used routinely to treat leukemia and hematologic disease via HSC transplantation. Indeed, HSC transplantation represents the only cure for Sickle Cell Disease, including autologous HSC transplantation combined with gene therapy. Here, our major goals are to better understand how elevated hematopoietic demand and chronic inflammation associated with Sickle Cell Disease perturbs the phenotype and function of HSCs. We employ both genetic mammalian model systems and primary patient samples to pursue these aims.

16. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Chen Lab studies: i) Chemical modulation of transcription; ii) Signal crosstalk among transcription factors; and iii) Selective inhibition of highly homologous enzymes. We take a hypothesis-driven and technology-enabled multidisciplinary approach to develop chemical probes and investigate biological mechanisms. Particularly we use the promiscuous xenobiotic nuclear receptors (PXR and CAR) as models to investigate the transcription networks that regulate therapeutic responses. PXR and CAR regulate the detoxification system (e.g., by transcriptionally controlling CYP3A4 and CYP3A5—drug-metabolizing enzymes that metabolize more than 50% of clinical drugs), the dysregulation of which contributes to drug toxicity and drug resistance.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Several postdoctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Victor J. Torres in the new Department of Host-Microbe Interactions at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Torres lab is interested in dissecting the complex interactions between pathogenic bacteria and the mammalian host. Currently, the lab is focusing on antibiotic resistant (AMR) bacteria, which have been recognized by the World Health Organization as a serious threat to human health.

We take advantage of multidisciplinary approaches and combine techniques from bacteriology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, cellular biology, and immunology with primary tissue culture models and a variety of murine models of infection, to address our favorite questions. Our ultimate goal is to understand the basic principles of bacterial pathogenesis as well as to develop a platform for the discovery of targets that could be exploited for the generation of much-needed therapies.
