1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ecology and Genetics Research
Summary of PhD Program:
This project aims to understand intra- and inter-species variation in recombination rate and its evolutionary drivers in wild bird populations. First, we will use long-term population and pedigree data to assess the heritability and genetic basis of recombination rate in the great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus). For this, we will use the “animal model” framework, QTL mapping methods and genome-wide association studies (GWAS). We will then proceed to estimate the fitness effects of individual-level recombination, with a focus on variation between sexes and its consequences. This will be one of the first studies to evaluate the fitness effects of recombination rates in wild populations.
Application Deadline: 15th of August 2023
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Wireless mMIMO Signal Processing
Summary of PhD Program:
The wireless communications community is looking towards higher frequencies to achieve even up to multi-hundred-gigabit link speeds. Especially above 100 GHz frequencies, beamforming gain plays a major role in the establishment of the connections. This promotes using large antenna arrays that, on the other hand, allow flexible beamforming in the general case. The term massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) is often used in conjunction with research involving very large antenna arrays (with hundreds of antenna elements).

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Channel Modeling for Terahertz Satellite Applications
Summary of PhD Program:
During the last years, sub-THz frequencies (100 – 300 GHz) have gained a lot of attention because of the very high theoretical data rates. It has been shown in the past that the sub-THz and THz (+300 GHz) bands are suitable for long-distance communications, but these links will require very high antenna gains. It has also been shown that these frequencies will theoretically be suitable for satellite-to-airplane and satellite-to-Earth links. Hence, the (sub-)THz frequencies promise high bandwidth backhaul links regardless of the location on Earth.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Small Matters
Summary of PhD Program:
The project’s scientific relevance is that smallness as a concept will reconfigure who and what the human is. It brings together in intra-generational educational encounters, small matters that are usually invisible and excluded from conversations about death and dying in public spaces (young children, SARS-CoV-2, small animals, the digital, microbes etc.). Listening to their stories in philosophical enquiries matters, because it will change how humans relate to themselves, others and the environment. The Small Matters project explores experiences of death and dying at different scales (e.g., micro) together with children from a local university primary school and their extended families. Research methods include the community of philosophical enquiry of Philosophy for Children, the arts-based Reggio Emilia approach and material interviews.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Resilient Wireless Networks for 6G
Summary of PhD Program:
Wireless networks have traditionally been designed with moderate quality of service (QoS) guarantees, whereas most mission-critical communications, e.g., in industrial networks, are realized over wired networks which are usually robust but not as flexible as wireless links. Recent development in wireless technologies, such as the introduction of the ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) service class in 5G NR, opened the door for wireless networks to be deployed to serve mission-critical applications with stringent QoS guarantees. The shared nature of the wireless channel imposes different challenges in maintaining the stringent QoS requirements of mission-critical communication and ensuring that the network is resilient.
