Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Single particle cryo-EM of membrane proteins

Summary of PhD Program:

A Ph.D. position is available in the laboratory “Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins” at the VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology, Brussels, Belgium. For our growing team, we are offering a Ph.D. position to solve membrane protein structures through cryo-EM. The lab offers several projects on disease-relevant ion channels, lipid scramblases, and transporters which will be negotiated with the candidate. Our projects are connected to central cell biological and neurobiological questions but offer also aspects of translational research.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in genetics of epilepsy

Summary of PhD Program:

Epilepsy is a common chronic brain disease affecting more than 50 million people worldwide. Despite major advances in therapy, 1/3 of individuals remain drug-resistant. Many also develop co-morbid behavioral and neurodevelopmental problems, making epilepsy a major public health problem. Epilepsy can have various etiologies, but especially in childhood-onset epilepsies genetics plays a central role.

Over half of children who develop epilepsy will not have a definitive diagnosis using current genetic approaches. Making a genetic diagnosis is however key to providing effective and individualized therapy. We combine trios long-read whole genome sequencing with whole genome methylomics and transcriptomics to pin down novel genetic causes of disease. Recently, we have also begun analyzing cell-free DNA for unique methylation patterns and somatic mutations that can further explain the missing diagnostic gap.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular and Computational Neurogenomics

Summary of PhD Program:

The overarching goal of this proposal is to understand why and how dysregulation of omnipresent and constantly expressed ARS proteins leads to dying-back neurodegeneration and affects specifically the peripheral neurons (PNs). This neuronal population contains the most polarized cells in our body and their sophisticated morphology and function render them highly susceptible to degeneration. The preliminary data generated in-house as well as the available public data suggest mechanisms involving genetic, epigenetic and chromatin organisation factors governing the cell-type specific response to ARS mutations.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI-driven modelling and design of cell type-specific enhancers

Summary of PhD Program:

The project, funded by an FWO Strategic Basic Research (SBO) grant, will focus on designing and testing enhancers to target transgenes to specific cell types in the mouse brain and in cultured human brain biopsies using adeno-associated viral vectors. The project will have both a computational and wet lab component. The Ph.D. student will be stationed in the De Wit lab but will be embedded in both the De Wit and the Aerts lab as well as the Leuven Bioinformatics and Leuven AI community. The PhD student will be jointly supervised by Joris de Wit and Stein Aerts.
