1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mapping capillary vessels mechanics with stabilized bubbles

Summary of PhD Program:

Our healthcare system is under unsustainable strain owing, largely, to cardiovascular diseases and cancer. For both, imaging vasculature and flow precisely is paramount to reduce costs while improving diagnosis and treatment. Specifically, the focus is on the multiscale aspects of shear, vorticity, pressure, and mechanics within arteries and capillary beds (10 – 200 um vessels). However, this requires an imaging depth of ~10 cm with a resolution of ~50 um. Furthermore, velocities often exceed 1m/s, which requires a frame rate of ~1000 fps. So far, clinical imaging modalities have been incapable of reaching sufficient spatiotemporal resolution and there is thus a dire need for new techniques.

2. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in Ultrasound attenuation mapping for distortion compensation

Summary of PhD Program:

Plane-wave ultrasound enhanced with contrast microbubbles outperforms all modalities in safety, cost, and speed, and is thus the ideal candidate to address this need. The strategy proposed in the Super-FALCON project harnesses the nonlinear dynamics of monodisperse microbubbles.

Work package 1 (PhD position 1) will use deep learning and GPU-accelerated acoustic simulations to recover super-resolved (1/20th of the wavelength) bubble clouds.

In work package 2 (PhD position 2), we will create a new physical model for confined bubbles and use them as nonlinear sensors for capillary imaging.

In work package 3 (PhD position 3), we will disentangle attenuation and scattering using the physics and mathematics of nonlinear ultrasound propagation complemented with deep learning. This will allow us to correct for wave distortion and apply the strategies from work packages 1 and 2 in deep tissue.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Program Analysis for LLVM-IR and all its source languages

Summary of PhD Program:

With the omnipresence of software, our lives and income depend crucially on the quality of software: software failures can cause planes to crash, emergency service to be unreachable, and companies to lose millions of dollars (because of missed business opportunities, but also due to reputation damage). Therefore, software developers are urgently looking for techniques that can help them to improve the quality of their software. Formal verification techniques that allow one to prove that software will never reach an erroneous state can play an essential role in this. However, to use this in an industrial setting, we need to make sure that the verification technology can be used in combination with the newest programming language technology. Deductive program verification is a formal verification technique that works directly at the code level, and non-trivial case studies have shown its potential.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Enhancing Sustainability in Industry for Improved Health

Summary of PhD Program:

The objective is to understand how sustainability strategies (including circular economy practices, diffusion of renewable energy technologies, healthy lifestyles, sustainable consumption, etc.) can reshape the future of industry and health systems. In fact, by prioritising sustainable practices in industry, we can reduce pollution and environmental degradation, leading to cleaner air and water for everyone. This, in turn, can improve public health and reduce healthcare costs. Additionally, sustainable practices often involve the use of renewable energy sources, which can create new jobs and boost the economy. By supporting sustainable practices, individuals and communities can work towards a better quality of life for all, both now and in the future.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular neuromorphic devices for energy efficient computing

Summary of PhD Program:

Inspired by the incredible energy efficiency of our own molecular “supercomputer”, our brains, the aim of this project is to fabricate artificial neural networks based on molecule-polymer hybrid devices. The molecular hybrid structures exploit the dynamical behavior of such systems needed to create devices tailored for spike-timing dependent computing leading to energy efficient computing. The challenge will be to develop fabrication methods that preserve the molecule polymer hybrid structures and their dynamical properties. Mainly, to preserve the chemistry (dynamic covalent bond formation) that drives the molecular switches in the devices and to optimize them (switching speeds, energy efficiency, stability) which will be studied by electrical measurements and/or in situ spectroscopy.

Fully Funded PhD Position in Joint-on-Chip for inflammation in Osteoarthritis

Summary of PhD Program:

A deeper understanding of Osteoarthritis (OA) and the development of effective therapies remains limited by unrepresentative in vitro and in vivo models. There is an unmet need for a predictive, human, multi-tissue in vitro joint models recapitulating key features of the moving joint, which can mimic disease-initiating and aggravating cues, such as inflammation. Organs-on-Chips (OoCs) are highly promising advanced in vitro models, which enable modeling of the crosstalk between individual tissues in a single platform. Such feat allows for close mimicry of the multi-tissue intra-articular environment, thus ideally suited to emulate complex diseases such as OA.
