4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Using APOE-associated AD resilience to identify potential biomarkers

Summary of PhD Program:

Recent research has also identified rare APOE gene variants, such as R251G (ε4) and V236E (ε3), which reduce the risk of AD by 2–3 times. This project will use bioinformatics and big data and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models —cells generated in the lab that can mimic brain cells—to study these APOE variants. By developing iPSC lines with and without these rare variants, we aim to identify new biomarkers (measurable indicators) linked to resilience against AD.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Patient and public involvement in medical mycology: investigating opportunities and designing solutions

Summary of PhD Program:

The project will involve interviewing scientists and lay people about their views on PPI and medical mycology. A literature review will also be conducted. Data collection and analysis will be informed by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), a structured framework used to identify barriers and facilitators to the implementation of new ways of working. Findings from the interviews and review will be used to identify strategies that can underpin an approach to design, refine, and evaluate PPI in medical mycology. Training in qualitative research methods, mycology and microbiology (at a level of understanding rather than practising), and methods and theories of PPI will be offered.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exploring the efficacy of Virtual training for x-ray scanning image interpretation in aviation security

Summary of PhD Program:

The project is focused on a new virtual training system being developed by Smiths Detection, which will train the cognitive, perceptual and procedural skills needed to operate x-ray equipment used to screen baggage and cargo. As such the PhD project is being set up to answer important questions about especially when viewed on mobile) how the training system supports learning, and how subsequent performance in the real-world is affected ,and how trainees acquire the perceptual skills needed to interpret the x-ray images produced by the x-ray equipment. In terms of discipline, the work will be a combination of Psychology, Human factors, and Pedagogy.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in The evolution of collective conflict in wild banded mongooses

Summary of PhD Program:

The evolution of intergroup conflict has become a topic of intense research in organisms ranging from microbes to ants to chimpanzees, and in both ancestral and modern humans. Much of this attention has focused on the potential for warfare – defined broadly as lethal or injurious intergroup conflict – to favour the evolution of altruism and cooperation within groups. However, testing this idea has proved difficult because fights between animal groups are unpredictable and fast moving and hard to study in the wild.
