1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Program:

The omnipresence of sensors causes a growth of data that offers the potential for a significant transformation in the health care sector. As wearable devices are becoming more widespread, continuous measurements of critical biomarkers can be performed to collect longitudinal data. This data can be analyzed using deep learning techniques to facilitate patient screening, support medical diagnosis, and forecast important medical events. Furthermore, by considering the longitudinal aspect of the data, patient health trajectories can be identified that allow the tracking of disease progression over time. Potential application areas include the prediction of heart arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, or the assessment and monitoring of cardiovascular health through analysis of various parameters that are measured with novel hardware devices.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Psychology

Summary of PhD Program:

An important challenge for psycholinguistics is to explain the cognitive processes that underlie speakers’ ability to quickly and accurately plan sentences, select words, and to say them out loud. Several influential theories of language production have been proposed that capture important aspects of this skill. But strikingly, they ignore an extremely salient aspect of everyday speech: the fact that it is full of disfluencies. This project will test key mechanisms that we hypothesize to play a role in the production of disfluencies, such as self-monitoring of speech and the coordination between speech planning and execution. The mechanisms discovered in the empirical work will inform a computational model, and we will try to simulate both our own findings and data reported in the literature.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geology

Summary of PhD Program:

You will perform cutting-edge scientific research in the context of the ERC Starting Grant “FLOWSCOPY: Unravelling unsteady fluid flows in porous media with 3D X-ray micro-velocimetry”. Fluid flows in porous materials are a widespread phenomenon, just think of groundwater flow in the subsurface. The behavior of the flow on the large scale, for example how a pollutant spreads in a soil after an environmental disaster, is controlled by how fluids work their way through a maze of minuscule, interconnected pores in the material. Such flows involve complex fluid physics that are currently far from being fully understood.

Such flows involve complex fluid physics that are currently far from being fully understood. However, there is a major challenge to study this: how do you measure fluid flow in minuscule pores inside a material? In this project, new techniques will be developed to solve this using high-resolution X-ray CT, based on principles used in hospitals to image patients, but at a hundred times higher resolution.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Bioscience Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Tree canopies are one of the most recognizable features of forests, providing shelter from external influences to a myriad of species that live in the understorey. Canopy disturbances are now accelerating across European forests, and climate-change induced drought is a key driver. These disturbances are opening the canopy and exposing forest biodiversity to no-analog light regimes and drought – light and drought levels they have never been exposed to before. As the majority of forest plant species occur in the shade below tree canopies, the combination of altered light regimes and intensifying droughts can strongly impact forest biodiversity. However, the interactive effects of novel light regimes and drought on temperate forest biodiversity have never been investigated before.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Languages and Cultures

Summary of PhD Program:

The project “The Mosques of Kerala: Artistic Vocabularies in the Identity-Building of Muslim Communities” aims to study the mosques on the Malabar coast of India, particularly those erected along the coastline of the modern state of Kerala and southern Karnataka, in southern India, from the initial spread of Islam in the 7th century (according to legends) to the presente day, their peculiar style, their recent transformation and their role in the processes of identity building of the local Muslim communities. The structures to be investigated generally display unique formal elements. They seem to be the result of a remarkable combination of artistic vocabularies apparently borrowed from other Muslim regions – the Arabian Peninsula and Central Asia – and fused with elements drawn from local and South East Asian vernacular and temple architecture.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated PhD student to optimize genome editing techniques and study carbon capture mechanisms in the green seaweed Ulva. The PhD project is part of an FWO ERC Runner-up project (Starting Grant) that has emerged from existing research lines in Phycology Research Group and Plant Genome Editing Group at Ghent University on Ulva functional biology. More specifically, we want to understand the cellular processes that allow Ulva compressa to control carbon fixation. To achieve this, we first need to expand our toolset: we are able to activate the expression of genes (gain-of-function), but are limited by the efficiency of technology enabling inhibition of gene function (loss-of-function). Ulva is currently the only macroalgae where gain- and loss-of-function mutants can be generated and an emerging model in molecular biology.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electronics and Information Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

Within the framework of a newly funded ERC Consolidator Grant (PASTIME project), we are seeking several motivated PhD students in biophysical modeling. The students will perform theoretical and computational research using simulations at the molecular scale. In the PASTIME project, we will search for methodologies to study the kinetics of drug transport. Since experiments often are too expensive or lack sufficient detail, molecular simulations can give insight in the dynamics of drug binding to proteins, or the permeation kinetics of those drug molecules through membranes. While such computational methodologies exist, new fundamental developments are needed to understand the ‘time’ aspects and to make the computations feasible with present-day computer power.
