2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aerosol Technology with focus on health relevant workplace emissions

Summary of PhD Program:

Air pollution, especially airborne particles, is the primary environmental cause of death globally. To create a safe and sustainable society, we need to understand this exposure and its sources. At workplaces, air pollution levels are often particularly high, and herewe are also facing potential problems from emissions of new types of air pollution, for example from production and handling of manufactured nano materials, or recycling of batteries from the green transition. From a health- and regulatory point of view, not only the levels of airborne pollutants are of interest, the physico-chemical properties (such as particle size, shape, and chemical composition) of the emissions govern their potential toxicity.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aerosol Technology: Investigating Exhaled Particles and Viruses in the Air

Summary of PhD Program:

By aerosol we mean a particle suspension in a gas or gas mixture. The most common aerosol is our ambient air. Particles in our air environment have major effects on our health. For example, air pollution causes 9 million deaths globally each year. If smoking and airborne infection are included, the figure is more than twice as high. At the same time, airborne particles can be used for good purposes in, among other things, medical applications. Therefore, it is important to gain more knowledge about the effects of aerosols on our health.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of the PhD project is to investigate the olfactory sense of the Australian Bogong moth Agrotis infusa, a remarkable long-distance nocturnal migrant. In Spring, this moth uses stellar and magnetic cues as compasses to guide its long journey from its breeding grounds around southeast Australia towards cool alpine caves in the Australian Alps (where it spends 3-4 months in a dormant state). These cues are also used to guide the moth’s return journey back to the breeding grounds in Autumn. Preliminary data now suggest that Bogong moths sense a specific cave odour to pinpoint their destination caves during the final phase of their Spring journey, suggesting a highly multimodal navigational system.
