1. Fully Funded PhD Position in self-emerging architected materials

Summary of PhD Program:

The Chair of Computational Mechanics of Building Materials (CMBM) aims to understand and predict mechanical failure in materials and structures. By combining numerical modeling tools with tailored laboratory experiments and theoretical models, we create a holistic perspective on mechanical failure, bridging the gap between material behavior at the small scale and principles governing catastrophic failure at the system level. CMBM is a highly interdisciplinary and international research team. The topics of current research projects at CMBM include uncovering the mechanisms of earthquake nucleation and arrest, building structures with topologically interlocked materials, revealing the processes governing the structural build-up of cement in additive manufacturing, determining the nano- and micro-scale processes that control cracking of concrete due to corrosion, uncovering the fundamental laws governing granular materials, and revealing the damage and fracture mechanisms in soft materials.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in experimental fluid dynamics, shock-wave physics and X-ray imaging for biomedical applications

Summary of PhD Program:

The research in the newly established Multiphase Fluid Dynamics group at ETH Zurich examines both fundamental and applied questions in various small-scale multiphase fluid phenomena, such as bubble and droplet dynamics and the resulting fast flows. One of our key objectives is to control bubble oscillations to exploit their energy-focusing characteristics in biomedical applications. We also develop experimental techniques to observe and characterise high-speed multiphase fluid phenomena optically and acoustically. The group is part of the Institute of Fluid Dynamics, which pursues a broad range of experimental, numerical and theoretical research efforts in a friendly and inclusive environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in developing physics-based loss models of advanced magnetic devices for future highly efficient drive and converter systems

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated individuals interested in pursuing a PhD in the multidisciplinary and important research area of modelling and optimisation of magnetic components and electric machines. Highly efficient as well as compact transformers and chokes are critical elements in most power electronic systems, because these components drastically influence the overall efficiency and power density of converters. Similarly, in electric drive systems the overall efficiency and power density are significantly affected by the iron and winding losses in the machine. In order to pace with the rapid development of semiconductors (e.g. wide bandgap SiC MOSFETs/GaN HEMTs), advanced concepts for magnetic devices and in particular comprehensive models of the core losses should be developed by you.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in sensitivity of past warm climates to CO2

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project focuses on the relationship between atmospheric CO2 and the surface ocean temperature during key time windows of the Miocene period, in order to better understand the processes contributing to warm climates during periods of higher than preindustrial greenhouse gas conditions. For this project, ETH has partnered with a research group at Purdue University in the USA, where general circulation models of Miocene climate will be run. Together with the Purdue team, our research team will develop new proxy system models and employ them to more robustly compare the geochemical proxy records with climate model simulations. The project is funded by an SNF grant for four years.

11. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Designing intelligence in battery-less micromechanical structures

Summary of PhD Program:

Intelligent devices are everywhere (in sensors monitoring infrastructure, in medical prostheses, wearables and smart speakers). However, their autonomy is severely constrained by the need for large batteries, which also have a negative environmental impact. A recent study forecasted that, by 2025, we will be throwing away 80 million batteries a day. We are looking for two Ph.D. students to overcome this challenge using intelligent micromechanical systems.

In the same way that automatic Swiss watches power themselves from the motion of the wearer, we will design and make (micro)-mechanical computing elements that use energy from ambient vibrations – without the need for power wires or batteries. These elements will rely on geometric nonlinearities to perform complex tasks. In fact, while nonlinearity is usually avoided in mechanical designs, here we will leverage it to achieve unprecedented computational capabilities: by combining nonlinear elements as ‘lego pieces’ a targeted response will be achieved.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in dynamics of quantum materials under pressure

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this project is to investigate ultrafast dynamics of quantum materials under pressure. Pressure is a crucial parameter in setting the ground state of the material in thermodynamic equilibrium. Our goal is to investigate the dynamical response of the system once it is brought out of equilibrium following excitation by an ultrashort pulse of light. The knowledge acquired from this study will enable a better control of the properties of quantum materials and will inform theory developments that seek to model ultrafast material responses.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Self-assembled Colloidal Micromachines

Summary of PhD Program:

Artificial intelligence enables robotic machines to autonomously adapt to their surroundings and perform complex tasks.
