2. Fully Funded PhD Position in coherent feedback control of nanomechanical oscillators

Summary of PhD Program:

Feedback is a powerful control technique in the classical and quantum domain. The conventional strategy relies on performing a measurement, classical (usually electronic) signal processing, and feedback to an actuator on the system. However, when applied to quantum systems, the measurement disturbs the quantum state, resulting in measurement back-action and decoherence. A different kind of feedback is possible: coherent feedback of quantum signals that are processed quantum mechanically and actuate the system without any intervening measurement. This approach raises interesting conceptual questions and promises new control techniques for quantum systems.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in creating a diamond-based spin-photon interface

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will address the emitter conundrum. The crucial idea is to take a well-known and easy to-create colour centre in diamond (a host with almost no magnetic noise) but in an unusual charge state. The colour centre is the SiV. Typically, the stable state is the SiV-, which has the virtue of being insensitive to charge noise but the vice of possessing a coherent spin only at ultralow temperatures. The proposal is to operate the same complex but in the charge-neutral state, SiV0. The first step is to understand the photo-physics of the SiV0, the second step to boost massively the efficiency by coupling a single SiV0 to an open microcavity.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in synapse-type specific proteome studies

Summary of PhD Program:

In an interdisciplinary project supported by an Ambizione grant of the Swiss National Science Foundation, we will investigate the molecular diversity of synaptic proteomes from in-vivo brain structures (see van Oostrum et. al. 2023 bioRxiv, Cell – in press 2023). Conceptually the research aims at understanding how synaptic proteins determine synapse-type specific connectivity and function. The project integrates molecular neurobiology with systems neuroscience and combines state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based proteomics technologies with fluorescence activated sorting and in vivo labelling of defined synaptic populations within neuronal circuits. We are looking for a highly motivated student that is excited to learn and develop new technologies in order to drive biology.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in role of metallic nanoparticles in amyloid condensates and aggregates

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to investigate the role of metallic nanoparticles in amyloid aggregation that leads to neurodegenerative disease. The successful candidate will be employed by the Paul Scherrer Institute and will be enrolled within the graduate school of the Swiss Nanoscience institute at University of Basel. This interdisciplinary and collaborative project, led by the Luo and Hiller labs at PSI Villingen and Biozentrum, University of Basel. The project aims to unravel how metal ions cause amyloid proteins to aggregate and condense, leading to the creation of metallic nanoparticles with a zero-oxidation state. The ultimate goal is to gain insights for the development of new therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in radionuclides via the entrapment inside molecular containers

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to explore molecular containers for the separation radionuclides. The successful candidate will be employed by the University of Basel and will be enrolled in the graduate school of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute. This interdisciplinary project is carried out in the Tiefenbacher group and at the laboratory of radiochemistry. This project first aims to construct novel molecular containers that are able to entrap metal ions. A molecular container is a host molecule that can bind a guest molecule. If the guest is completely surrounded by the container, and unable to escape, the container is called a ‘carcerand’.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in molecular microbiology of bacterial biofilms

Summary of PhD Program:

The research group of Knut Drescher focuses on understanding the development and functions of bacterial biofilms, particularly in the context of human infections, using controlled laboratory experiments or clinical samples. Biofilms are antibiotic-tolerant bacterial communities that are the cause of many chronic and acute infections, but biofilms are also a model system for understanding basic aspects of multicellular organization in bacteria. The PhD projects on bacterial biofilms be within the broad set of topics investigated within the research group, and will require a background in molecular microbiology. The exact projects are flexible and will be developed together with Knut Drescher, depending on the strengths and interests of the PhD students.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydrogeology & Agricultural Water Management

Summary of PhD Program:

Mountainous countries like Switzerland are overproportionally affected by climate change, with temperature rise and increasing weather extremes such as heat waves, droughts, and torrential rainfalls already being more pronounced than elsewhere. Under these circumstances, water supply is becoming a major challenge for agriculture, be it for crop production or animal husbandry. In addition, water in mountain communities becomes increasingly scarce during summer months. This is where the Swiss Federal Office of Agriculture FOAG-funded “Slow Water” project comes in: In 3 hydrologically and geographically distinct pilot regions of Switzerland, farm-specific, catchment-related water retention strategies are to be developed together with municipalities and farmers, and their impacts assessed.
