The research assigned to the PhD position has a focus on developing machine learning (ML) modules to process tactile and tremor signals generated by neuromorphic electronic skin (ne-skin). The ne-skin converts analog tactile signals into electrical pulses, thus encoding the mechanical signals in spike timing. The mathematical model that we mainly consider in this project is the Vlasov-Maxwell system. 7. PhD Programs in astronomy
Summary of PhD Positions:
The goal of the PhD project is to develop an efficient automatic and dynamically trainable classification and anomaly detection pipeline for spectroscopic + photometric astronomical surveys, which can compute probabilities for each object (astronomical source) in very large data sets to belong to different categories of objects (e.g. stars, galaxies, active galactic nuclei). To achieve this, supervised and unsupervised Bayesian machine learning methods will be adapted and employed, as well as methods for handling vast and high-velocity data sets.
Initially, the work will be performed using data from earlier astronomical surveys and simulations, and is expected to transition to using observational data from 4MOST in 2024/25. The PhD project will primarily focus on the technical application of data-intensive methods and machine learning, rather than physical analysis and modelling of astronomical objects.

9. PhD Programs in Energy Materials Physics
Summary of PhD Positions:
The PhD student will work with, and develop, energy materials. An important aspect of this work will be the use and development of methods that combine photoelectron spectroscopy with electrochemistry to study corrosion while it is happening, i.e., in-situ. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) and ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) both at synchrotron radiation facilities as well as in-house are central in this project for studying the chemical composition of the surface and in the bulk of new materials.
This will be combined with electrochemical measurements, both in-situ and ex-situ. The PhD student will develop models to increase the corrosion resistance and will also have the possibility to take part in the development of new materials. Summary of PhD Positions:
As a PhD student in the Microbial Chemistry group, you will work on engineering cyanobacteria, photosynthetic microorgansims with the ability to convert solar energy, CO2 and water into useful compounds. Our research is focused on metabolic engineering of cyanobacteria for renewable generation of chemicals and fuels, with the greater goal to contribute to a sustainable future through biotechnology. Genetic engineering is used to alter the metabolism of cyanobacteria, so that we can harvest the converted solar energy and CO2 in the form of desired products, generated directly within the host cell.
Your project will aim to generate strains of cyanobacteria with new capabilities in formation of renewable chemicals, specifically products from the terpenoid biosynthesis pathway. Terpenoids are a large family of compounds, with many different applications ranging from fuels to pharmaceuticals. In your research, you will identify and develop target pathways and enzymes to be incorporated in the cells, make genetic constructs and test them in model organisms at different scales, and evaluate the results. Molecular and biochemical techniques are used, at Uppsala University and in collaborations with other labs, to analyse the response of the cells to genetic and environmental changes, in terms of productivity, growth, photosynthesis, and other characteristics.

Summary of PhD Positions:
The goal of the PhD project is fundamental understanding of electrodes based on metal plating for use in future rechargeable batteries. More specifically, we intend to identify and analyze passivation layers intended to stabilize the interfaces between electrodes and electrolyte. The research methodology is centered around the development and application of a methodology based on combined modeling and experimental analysis.
Experimental focus is on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and quartz crystal microbalance. In order to describe the experimental observations, Lattice-Boltzmann simulations coupled to phasefield theory are used. Data-driven methods, such as machine learning, are applied to optimize the simulation procedure. The work will be conducted at the Ångström Advanced Battery Center (ÅABC) at Uppsala University.
