2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bridging Biodiversity Assessment with Satellite

Summary of PhD Program:

Our planet is currently facing its sixth mass extinction event, primarily driven by the practice of outsourcing agriculture to biodiversity-rich regions in the global South. In response to this critical situation, it is of utmost importance to actively monitor and mitigate the biodiversity impacts stemming from global agri-food supply chains. Economy-wide Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and satellite imagery represent scientifically robust methods to address this issue, but their harmonized potential remains largely untapped. Consequently, the BASIS project is dedicated to systematically bridging the gap between LCA and satellite imagery, creating a comprehensive methodology for monitoring biodiversity impacts within global agri-food supply chains.

To accomplish this objective, the BASIS project will harness the capabilities of modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop predictive models capable of distinguishing the spectral signatures indicative of biodiversity dynamics from agricultural land use alterations. By integrating these models with global supply-chain analyzes and real-world applications, the BASIS project will offer sustainable decision support to industry and policymakers, thereby contributing to the conservation and restoration of our planet’s precious ecosystems.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Combining Economy-wide Life-cycle Analysis

Summary of PhD Program:

In the coming decades, we must both ensure food security and address severe environmental issues, including climate change, water stress, and biodiversity loss. Many of these impacts are caused in global supply chains of agri-food products, whose demand is expected to double by 2060. Thus, the development of robust sustainability policies is imperative, but necessitates comprehensive insights into global agri-food supply chains and their environmental impacts under future scenarios.

Economy-wide life-cycle assessment (LCA) and integrated assessment models (IAM) offer two complementary methods to address this issue, but their harmonized potential remains largely untapped. While economy-wide LCA furnishes valuable information on global agri-food supply chains and their environmental footprints, it is limited in scenario modeling. Conversely, IAMs create future scenarios on optimal pathways for achieving the sustainable development goals, but lack in the consideration of global supply chains.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in process engineering for coffee extraction

Summary of PhD Program:

Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks in the world with corresponding economic importance. It is prepared by extracting aromatic substances from a particle pack of roasted and ground coffee beans. Extraction from flow-through particle packs can also be found in many other applications in process engineering. What these processes have in common is that they can be viewed as a superposition of a flow through a particle pack and a mass transport problem. The question of the optimal design of coffee extraction in order to achieve quality specifications for the respective process as efficiently and effectively as possible is being addressed as part of a larger cooperation project. Both experimental investigations and, above all, mathematical models are used as tools.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Design of smart CFRP structures

Summary of PhD Program:

In a first project (others to follow), smart CFRP rims for racing bikes and high-performance vehicles are to be designed, manufactured and tested. The mass and stiffness of vehicle rims significantly influence important driving dynamic properties and fuel consumption. As rims are also particularly relevant to road safety, the lightweight design potential usually is not fully exploited. Thus, high safety factors against failure increase weight and manufacturing costs. To avoid this, an integrated sensor system should predict and detect damages.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational design of modular multi-robot teams

Summary of PhD Program:

The position is focused on the top-down, optimisation driven design, planning and control of multi-robot systems focused on manufacturing applications. We envision that such systems would allow the realisation of designs with complex structures. The project encompasses various facets such as systems design, optimisation, robust design, control syn-thesis and simulation of modular multi-robot setups that can together carry out a common objective, like carrying out Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). The prospective candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing such flexible robot cells, collaborating closely with industry partners to achieve tangible outcomes.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Automotive In-Vehicle Diagnosis

Summary of PhD Program:

Our approach starts with monitoring of the traffic flows on the IVN among sub-functions mapped onto different ECUs/compute nodes within the IVN. In case an anomaly in the expected communication pattern of a traffic flow is detected, tracing of the processing within the source node of the respective flow is activated and the generated traces are analyzed in order to narrow down potential root causes for the anomaly. In our case, we rely on the MCDS tracing infrastructure provided with the Infineon AURIX MCU. This diagnosis process is controlled by a supervisor instance locally in the vehicle, which is either loosely or tightly coupled with a controller in the cloud that manages the diagnosis infrastructure of a multitude of cars.
