1. PhD Programs in “TEM Tomography of Organic Liquids”

Summary of PhD Positions:

You will develop aberration-corrected analytical transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to the 3D analysis of mesoporous silica or carbon as well as metal-organic and covalent organic frameworks. These scaffolds are filled with organic liquids. Cryo-preparation and transfer should be used to enable tomography and chemical analysis of organic solvents, catalysts and substrates within the mesopores. Beam damage of the sensitive structures should be avoided through the use of pixelated quantum design detectors and methods of sparse sensing in combination with machine learning concepts.

Initially the project will focus on the experimental microscopy and later shift to the computer-based interpretation of the image series for tomography. Most ambitious, microscopy should be progressed so that composition profiles within the liquids can be measured. Based on these microscopic profiles, the transport coefficients of various organic liquids in confinement should be determined.

2. PhD Programs in “Cryo-Atom Probe Tomography of Bio-Materials”

Summary of PhD Positions:

The successful candidate will perform experiments with cutting-edge instrumentation, cryo-preparation, atom probe tomography, and aberration-corrected TEM including cryo-transfer. The aim is to quench-freeze biological systems (viruses, genetically modified phages) embedded in an aqueous solution and make them accessible to FIB preparation and measurement with the atom probe.

Measurement conditions shall be optimized, volume reconstructions and chemical maps of standardized viruses and genetically modified phages shall be obtained. TEM images should be achieved for comparison, on the bases of which the correction of reconstruction artefacts in atom probe tomography shall be achieved. The chemical sensitivity and resolution shall be investigated on genetically modified (contrast-enhanced) samples. The successful candidate will be expected to publish in-peer reviewed journals, present at professional scientific conferences and assist in laboratory training of Master students.

3. PhD Programs in “Ionic Transport in Battery Materials”

Summary of PhD Positions:

The PhD student will perform experiments with cutting-edge instrumentation, e.g. thin film deposition by UHV sputtering, electrochemistry, optical spectroscopy, focussed ion beam preparation, electron beam lithography, transmission electron microscopy. The aim is to prepare battery anodes and cathodes from materials that are relevant for commercial batteries (Li4Ti5O12, LiMn2O4) as polycrystalline thin films.

In these, Li transport is studied in the bulk, grain boundaries and phase interfaces by in-situ optical microscopy/spectroscopy. Composition and temperature dependence of diffusion coefficients and, permeation coefficients through grain and phase boundaries are quantified. To develop a proper understanding of the observed phenomena, Monte-Carlo simulations of the transport are conducted.

4. PhD Programs in Real-Time Data Analysis and Predictions: From Sleep Data to Auditory Stimuli

Summary of PhD Positions:

The Scientific Computing group of Prof. Dr. Dirk Pflüger is offering a fully-funded position for initially 36 months on real-time aspects of personalized music for sleep, starting ideally April 1, 2023. As it is part of the EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network “Lullabyte”, the salary is calculated according to MSC regulations.

Little is known about the effects of music and sound on sleep. The Lullabyte network will therefore combine the expertise of 10 excellent European institutions, bringing together the fields of musicology, neuroscience, psychology, and computer science. This creates a strong interdisciplinary and international network of researchers and leading non-academic partners, providing basis for cutting edge research and innovative training tailored to the special needs of this interdisciplinary field of music and sleep.

6. PhD Programs in Tissue identification using electrical impedance spectroscopy

Summary of PhD Positions:

New surgical methods aim to minimize invasiveness, morbidity and duration of the treatment while maximizing the effectiveness. During these surgical interventions, a reliable identification of target structures and surrounding tissue is of major importance for achieving this objective, particularly in the field of oncology. The RTG focuses on intraoperative tissue identification. The fusion of novel multimodal sensor systems by means of machine learning offers a high potential for new procedures to discriminate between tissues that goes beyond the information content of the separate sensor data.
