1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Data Engineering for Health Data

Summary of PhD Program:

It is produced and consumed at an unprecedented degree of size and velocity, which, among others, have contributed to the recent breakthroughs in the area of machine learning, see for instance large language models. In addition, traditional applications such as statistical research or management decisions consider themselves as highly “data-driven”. However, the acquisition, governance, and utilization of this non-tangible resource poses as an intricate endeavor.

The healthcare domain represents an especially challenging and interesting case in this context: On the one hand, the extremely confident nature of the data, a maze of complex regulations, as well as the strong heterogeneity in information systems, data formats, and communication protocols. On the other hand, the potential positive societal impacts by utilizing the available data better, such as via AI-assisted diagnostics supported by natural language or computer vision models, large comprehensive anonymized data sets fostering medical research, or accessible organizational event data for improved resource utilization.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in mathematical image processing techniques

Summary of PhD Program:

The candidate will participate in a project developing new mathematical and computational tools to determine porous material properties from imaging data. The project aims to address the challenge of accurately estimating these properties by developing new tools and techniques.

The first part of the project involves utilizing micro-scale information from images, including details at the image resolution limit. By applying image processing methods, such as denoising algorithms, the fine-scale information can be separated from the coarse-scale structures or objects. This fine-scale information then guides the development of a more realistic flow model for porous media, leading to improved estimation of substance-related parameters.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in history

Summary of PhD Program:

The project seeks to rethink the great trade network called the Silk Road, which connected Europe, Asia and Africa from antiquity to early modern times. There are few systematic studies of how this trade network operated in practice, and little research has been done on the role of the cities along the route. The SilkRoMo project will remedy this lack of knowledge by carrying out a comparative study of four cases from the late antique period: the kingdom of Kroraina, the kingdom of Kucha, the kingdom of Rob, as well as the cities of Palmyra and Dura-Europos. By combining detailed comparative studies with new perspectives and theoretical innovations, the SilkRoMo project seeks to renew thinking around the Silk Road, as well as to contribute new perspectives to the debate around early globalization processes and trade in antiquity more generally.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer Science: Framework for Continuous and Automated Threat Modeling

Summary of PhD Program:

Identifying security issues before attackers intrude the system has become a critical concern for software development teams and software users. Threat modelling is a major activity to find specific potential security vulnerabilities and their associated risks in the design of a system so that they can be addressed in a targeted manner. Many of today’s systems are complex and are composed of smaller components which are curated through the development and deployment platforms such as source code repository, package managers, and CI/CD platforms. These contexts are traditionally not included in many design-stage threat modelling. The challenges are further exacerbated because existing systems are continuously changed, thus increasing their complexity and attack surface. Moreover, modern software development process often misses the design artefacts which further complicate the threat modelling goal.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in physiotherapy

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, we want to investigate whether the mobile application “Breathe Better” (PDB) is a tool that can contribute to strengthening self-treatment in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who struggle with heavy breathing (dyspnoea), coughing and overproduction of mucus. The aim is to investigate whether systematic use of PDB can improve health-related quality of life, dyspnoea and phlegm complaints as well as reduce exacerbations and hospitalizations.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in modelling and simulation of solid oxide fuel cell systems for maritime applica

Summary of PhD Program:

The main objective of the project to be worked on is the development of simulation models for establishing architectures for controlling a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system, which is part of a maritime energy system. The development is to be carried out with the help of big data analysis and machine learning with data from a test facility where a 100 kW SOFC will be running on renewable fuel as part of a prototype of a maritime propulsion system. The simulation models and control architectures shall aim for optimal operation of the fuel cell with respect to parameters like, for example, cell voltage, load, degradation, and environmental conditions. Furthermore, the simulation models shall be able to help with planning predictive maintenance of the fuel cell stack and its subsystems as well as be usable in simulations of hybrid maritime energy systems.
