University of Antwerp, Belgium invites online application for multiple fully funded PhD Programs in various research areas. Gross scholarship per month: € 2.713,15 – € 3.244,84. Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible.

1. PhD Programs in singleness studies (quantitative study)

Summary of PhD Positions:

The intellectual challenge that the Singleton project will tackle is identifying the relationship formation pathways of young adults in industrialized countries. We argue that there is a fundamental hidden relationship pathway in young adulthood where individuals might be experiencing difficulties in finding the right partner, maintaining a relationship or where they make a deliberate choice to remain single and for longer periods. This Singleton trajectory is characterized by a sequence of relatively short-lived committed relationships.

2. PhD Programs in Quantifying and modelling urban ecosystem services

Summary of PhD Positions:

ECOSPHERE is a research group of the Department of Biology at the University of Antwerp. ECOSPHERE’s research concentrates on the ecology of aquatic ecosystems and wetlands and the processes in the land-water interaction along the whole river continuum and the river-coastal sea interaction.

The concept of ecosystem services has gained attention since the publications of Costanza et al. (1997) in Nature and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2005. The concept received increasing attention ever since, both from science and policy. The strong integrative and multidisciplinary character allows to make the link between ecology, economy and society, creating opportunities for better underpinned nature and environmental policy.

3. PhD Programs in restoration ecology

Summary of PhD Positions:

This research project is carried out within the ECOSPHERE research group of the University of Antwerpen. The research of ECOSPHERE concentrates on the ecology of aquatic ecosystems and wetlands and the processes in the land-water interaction along the whole river continuum and the river-coastal sea interaction.

The studied systems vary from small streams with riparian margins over larger rivers and floodplains to estuaries, from the scale of a single molecule to an entire ecosystem. These studies, both descriptive and experimental in nature, are integrated to predict the impact of different management options on the functioning and the biodiversity of the system.

4. PhD Programs in CO2 drawdown in coastal marine systems

Summary of PhD Positions:

Tackling the climate crisis is one of the largest challenges to society of the 21st century. To meet the targets of the Paris agreement and limit global warming, active removal of CO2 from the atmosphere is urgently needed. Ocean alkalinisation aims to speed up the natural process of mineral weathering and provides a promising technology for CO2 drawdown. Application in coastal areas has the advantage that it counteracts ocean acidification, does not interfere with terrestrial land use, and can be directly integrated into existing coastal management programs with existing technology.

5. PhD Programs in filter-feeding kinematics and hydrodynamics in ducks and paddlefish

Summary of PhD Positions:

Bioinspiration (including biomimetics and biomimicry) develops novel materials, devices, and applications inspired by biological structures and strategies. The Nature4Nature project brings biologists, engineers, designers and manufacturers together to deliver early-stage researchers (ESRs) teaching in a learning environment that connects the inspiration, integration and implementation aspects of the bioinspiration process to undertake the conceptual, methodological and practical challenges.

To do so, the project will collectively focus on biological filtration mechanisms to explore, test and design high-throughput, clog-resisting filtration systems, which could ultimately alleviate the current problems facing aquatic environments.

7. PhD Programs in musculoskeletal magnetic resonance imaging

Summary of PhD Positions:

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is key for diagnosing knee injuries and monitoring recovery after surgery. However, conventional MRI has limitations in terms of image resolution and quality. The principal goal of this PhD project is to apply and evaluate a super-resolution reconstruction (SRR) framework for high-resolution 3D imaging of the knee, with a particular focus on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and associated injuries.

Next, we will use advanced quantitative MRI techniques to identify biomarkers (T2* and diffusion) of ACL tendon graft healing, which would open up exciting possibilities to help inform return to sports after ACL surgery and evaluate the effectiveness of new treatments to accelerate ACL graft healing. Sequence optimization is performed in collaboration with the imec-Vision Lab of UAntwerp (dept. of physics). You will perform ex vivo ultra-high field MRI in knee cadaver ligament and tendon tissue. Finally, sequences will be tested in volunteers and patients at the MRI department of the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA).
