Application Deadlines: February 20, 2023
4. PhD Programs in Fluid Mechanics
Summary of PhD Positions:
How can freezing of droplets be controlled with respect to flow, phase change and freezing time? Droplet flow phenomena are found widespread in everyday life. The co-existing flow mechanisms taking place inside and outside the droplets are however not as easily distinguished and quantified. Fundamental knowledge of how substrate material, external flow and internal convection influence the freezing process is furthermore crucial not only for disruptive innovations of anti-icing and de-icing mechanisms but also in various manufacturing processes and detection systems.
The goal of this project is to investigate the freezing of droplets in detail using advanced numerical and experimental methods. For this, we are looking for you with a degree in engineering physics or equivalent and who are interested in studying a generic case with advanced tools such as numerical simulations and measurements with laser-based methods.

5. PhD Programs in electric power engineering
Summary of PhD Positions:
We are looking for a doctoral student willing to do research at the frontline between substation automation and telecom networking. You will be part of a project regarding the use of 5G communication within the electricity grid, financed by Sweden´s Innovation Agency, Vinnova and carried out in collaboration with a number of industrial partners, among others, Hitachi Energy, Ericsson and Vattenfall.
Within the project there is room for two doctoral students, who are expected to work in close collaboration. This announcement concerns one of those two doctoral students, the one that will address the power-system side of the project. The doctoral student will work on flexible and reliable power systems automation over 5G wireless networks and its impact on power system reliability and operational risk. The work will require practical and theoretical insight in electric power systems and communication.
Application Deadlines: February 16, 2023
6. PhD Programs in electric power engineering
Summary of PhD Positions:
We are looking for a doctoral student within a project regarding the use of stochastic instead of deterministic methods to decide when it is needed to intervene in the free functioning of the electricity market. The project is funded of the Swedish Energy Agency. Bottlenecks in the electricity grid limit the functionality of the electricity markets. They can lead to high prices for consumption, make it unattractive to build renewable electricity production and can even put a stop to new connections.
The amount of power that the network can handle, before a bottleneck occurs, is based on so-called deterministic methods, where there is a sharp border between what is possible and what is not. The alternative, which will be developed in this project, is to quantify the risks that the market in combination with unforeseen component failure and forecast errors will lead to overload, major supply interruptions, etc.
Information about the risk enables an assessment from case to case (e.g. day-ahead, for each hour) whether it is worth taking the risks, considering the risks of limiting the market. There will still be bottlenecks, but they will no longer impose unnecessary restrictions on the electricity market with serious consequences.

7. PhD Programs in Signal Processing
Summary of PhD Positions:
Despite decades of successful development of cellular networks, rural regions around the globe are still largely lacking proper Internet acess. In the ongoing pre-standardization research stage of 6G, it is far from obvious whether and how 6G will be covering and connecting today’s many unconnected areas and people. This project will develop new practical relevant measures for how to assess the problem of rural connectivity and the associated geographical inequalities.
In particular we will formally combine radio network measures (cellular coverage, capacity, etc) with geographical measures (population density, mobility patterns, etc) into a novel, GIS-based methodology to analyse the societal impact of 6G (and previous generations) network deployments.
We will use signal processing tools and methods to model, analyse and compare radio coverage maps over larger geographical regions and specifically assess mathematical and statistical fairness and (in)equality measures. The methodologies will be tailored for eventual use in the development of rural business cases and in the regulatory domain.
The PhD project will be carried out within and financed by Arctic 6G, a collaborative research and innovation project within the Interreg Aurora programme that LTU will start together with partner universities in Finland: University of Oulu and Lapin AMK.
Application Deadlines: February 12, 2023
8. PhD Programs in Structural Engineering
Summary of PhD Positions:

9. PhD Programs in Construction Management and Building Technology
Summary of PhD Positions:
The doctoral project is carried out within Creaternity, which is one of Luleå University of Technology’s future areas that focuses on circularity and the transition towards a sustainable industry. Read more here: Creaternity. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with actors in the construction industry (e.g. NCC), that have important roles in enabling construction projects that contribute to the sustainable development of the construction sector.
You will also collaborate with other closely related research projects both within Luleå University of Technology and at other universities. The research project is aimed at increasing knowledge about what demands the client’s modern business models place on the suppliers and their business models in order to achieve sustainable construction projects.
The project aims to, through case studies, firstly map what opportunities the supplier currently has to work with sustainability and circularity, and secondly work on developing future supplier offers (business models) that include circularity and innovation.
The development of new business models will include activities that promote an iterative way of working such as focus groups and structured interviews. The collaboration between industry and researchers will therefore be extra important during this stage because the developed business models need to be implementable and fit into the supplier’s business.

10. PhD Programs in Entrepreneurship and Financing
Summary of PhD Positions:
We are recruiting a PhD candidate who will conduct research related to the research center Sustainable Finance Lab. The center was founded by a consortium of six universities and research institutes in Sweden which generates, groundbreaking research in close collaboration with national and international financial market actors.
Within the center consortium a broad network of academic and industrial partners come together, to undertake research and practice necessary for social and environmental sustainability transformation of financial markets. The project specifically contributes to the research domain that focuses financing of entrepreneurship for developing competitiveness and innovation.
Development of models and principles for efficient allocation of financing requires an understanding of financiers’ processes and decision-making, and consequences of such decision-making. The project specifically contributes with a gender perspective in the research field of entrepreneurial financing.

12. PhD Programs in Atmospheric Science
Summary of PhD Positions:
You will be welcomed into an expanding group of researchers in Luleå University of Technology’s Division of Space Technology, in the atmospheric sciences subject. Our research topics include mass and energy fluxes within planets and their atmospheres, as well as snow, ice, and dirt in terrestrial and space environments. Researchers in Kiruna develop instruments for use on the ground, on balloons and on spacecraft and analyse data from Earth-observing satellites and deep space probes.
With the use of high-resolution satellite images, we want to determine areas affected by industrial pollution, by measuring spatial variations in the spectral albedo of snow. The spectral reflectivity of snow during springtime is determined by a combination of the snowpack properties and the amount of pollutants on and within the snow. Satellite-borne multispectral imagers cover several channels in the visible and near infrared that are sensitive to variations in the reflectivity of snow.
Reflectivity changes as a result of melting processes and the pollution load. The analysis of satellite images will be supported by field-site measurements of snow properties, radiative conditions, albedo and pollution load. Additionally, in a dedicated ice laboratory, optical properties, melting behaviour and the dependence on pollution on and inside a snowpack will be examined in a controlled environment.
