1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Consumer Behaviour in the Context of Reusable Packaging

Summary of PhD Program:

The Marketing and Consumer Behaviour group at Wageningen University and Research is looking for a PhD candidate in the area of consumer behaviour change, in the context of reusable packaging. This PhD project is part of the NWO funded project Re2Pack. Reusable packaging systems (RPS) have promising environmental benefits compared to single-use packaging, yet have been subject to less integrated attention in science and society, potentially due to the complexity of the required system change. To address this, the project Re2Pack takes an interdisciplinary approach focused on value chains, consumer behaviour, and packaging design, to introduce sustainable RPS.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Synthetic Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

Living cells exhibit extensive sub-compartmentalization to regulate and communicate between thousands of interconnected biochemical reactions taking place within the cytoplasm. Along with well-known membrane-bound compartments, phase-separated membraneless organelles have been identified in recent years to play an equally important role in these processes. In this project, we will utilize coacervate-based strategy to form communicative membraneless compartments within cell-mimicking vesicles, with each of the compartments acting as distinct functional biochemical units. Being able to maintain distinct reaction hubs within vesicles will constitute an important step towards building intracellular communication networks. We will use a bioengineering approach, applying our microfluidic and protein engineering toolbox to design scalable multi-compartmentalization capable of organizing the intracellular reaction networks and pave a path towards complex synthetic cells.

3. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Scaling Circular Consumption: Sharing and repairing in everyday urban life

Summary of PhD Program:

The Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University is seeking two highly motivated PhD candidates to join a dynamic research team focused on advancing circular sharing and repairing practices in the Netherlands. The PhD projects form part of the NWO funded project ShaRepair, which is aimed at embedding sustainable sharing and repairing practices into daily urban life. Despite their potential for realising circular economy ambitions, sharing and repairing of consumer goods, such as electric appliances, furniture, and clothing, remain marginal in Dutch society, with challenges in participation and scaling across diverse communities.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in global carbon cycle and wildfire emissions

Summary of PhD Program:

Are you passionate about climate change and forests? Do you want to be part of an international team that aims to better understand how the global carbon cycle responds to climate change? Then we have an exciting PhD position for you! Landscape fires emit CO2 emissions roughly equivalent to 30% of global fossil fuel emissions. Their frequency and intensity is rapidly changing due to land use change and climate change, but exactly how is not well known. These fires impact air quality and climate, and sometimes lead to permanent forest loss. Over the last years major improvements have been made in how well we can detect these fires on a global scale, and also the degree to which forests are changing is now better known thanks to new and exciting satellite missions.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Innovative pathways for water pollution in the Mediterranean Agro-Hydro-System

Summary of PhD Program:

The Earth Systems and Global Change Group has recently been awarded the HORIZON project Path4Med which aims at demonstrating Innovative Pathways Addressing Water and Soil Pollution in the Mediterranean Agro-Hydro-System. The Path4Med project will develop and apply an innovative triple bottom line approach to achieving economic, social, and environmental sustainability to ensure human well-being and ecosystem functioning. The project focuses on the integration of different disciplines with the knowledge of various stakeholders using modeling tools to provide information services for the Mediterranean region.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Contested Landscapes

Summary of PhD Program:

Political ecologists highlight how industrial-capitalism, and its view of nature as separate from humanity, threaten the viability of life on the planet and disproportionately affect people and populations with long histories of colonial exploitation and violence. Anthropologists often reaffirm these findings. However, they also demonstrate possibilities for (everyday) resistance including the adaptability of longstanding, often environmentally more sustainable socio-ecological, economic and cultural practices and values.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Social organisation and vocal communication in wild zebra finches

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this project is to determine the nature of multi-level societies and the role of vocal signalling in their dynamics, using wild zebra finches in the Australian arid zone as model. Zebra finches are the best-studied avian model organism under laboratory conditions, yet their social organisation and communication in nature are poorly understood. Here we will use a long-term monitored Australian field population at the Fowlers Gap Research Station in NSW Australia, to determine their social organisation using automatized solar-powered radio tracking, combined with various bioacoustics approaches as well as breeding data.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in regulatory networks underlying temperature tolerance in cauliflower

Summary of PhD Program:

Cauliflower is an important vegetable that can grow in various climatic regions. However, it is sensitive to high ambient temperatures during development, which might result in delayed curd induction and poor curd quality. Some cauliflower accessions are more sensitive than others. The genetic basis underlying temperature tolerance is not well understood yet. In this project, we aim to optimize field phenotyping for the timing of curd initiation and curd architecture under various temperature conditions and to perform genomic and transcriptomic analysis to identify associated genomic regions and genes. This will ultimately contribute to the breeding of climate-proof cauliflowers.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biological pest control with biodiversity in and around greenhouses

Summary of PhD Program:

The project “Boosting Biocontrol with Biodiversity in and around greenhouse production systems” is financed by the mission driven NWO-KIC programme “Biodiversity and biotic stress in primary production systems”. As a PhD-candidate you will collaborate with other project partners of Leiden University, Utrecht University, Radboud University and InHolland. In this project, we will study how biodiversity in and around greenhouses can contribute to pest management in greenhouse production systems, but also the social barriers as well as possibly viable business implementations to promote nature-inclusive horticultural systems resilient to pests and diseases.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Farming system transformations through contract farming in Madagascar

Summary of PhD Program:

Join the TSARA project, a collaborative effort between Soil Physics and Land Management group (SLM) and Water Resources Management group (WRM) aimed at transforming agricultural systems in the Isandra District of Madagascar’s Haute Matsiatra region. TSARA, which stands for “Transformation des systèmes agricoles avec du riz et de l’artemisia”, is a public-private partnership project. It aims to develop integrated farmer-centred business propositions for outgrowers of rice and artemisia annua in rotation with food crops that will create work and better income opportunities for smallholder farmers (in particular women and youth) in the Isandra District of Haute Matsiatra region, Madagascar. Within this project, executed in collaboration with two enterprises, respectively supporting artemisia and rice value chain development, and the regional government, Wageningen University acts as knowledge partner and will provide technical assistance as well as focusing on impact assessment of project interventions.
