2. Fully Funded PhD Position in EPR Spectroscopy of Metalorganic Complexes

Summary of PhD Program:

Our research group characterizes small metalorganic complexes, metalloproteins and radical complexes by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. We employ a variety of advanced pulsed EPR techniques, including ENDOR, HYSCORE, and EDNMR to resolve both hyperfine and quadrupole nuclear interactions, informing us further of electronic and magnetic structure, covalency, and ligand identity. Familiarity with these techniques is favored for potential postdoc candidates (but not a requirement, particularly for doctoral candidates). Various potential projects are available, including the characterization of either metalloprotein intermediates, synthesis and characterization of iron-sulfur clusters, or synthesize and characterization of copper biomimetic complexes.

Application Deadline: 15 July 2023

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Vibrational Dynamics in Metal Cluster Complexes

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project aims to study vibrational relaxation processes in gas-phase complexes of transition metal clusters via time-resolved spectroscopies. The project will build upon existing and to-be-designed experimental setups to characterize metal cluster complexes via the combination of mass spectrometry and laser spectroscopy, in particular utilizing the different Infrared Free Electron Lasers (IR-FELs) that are available at both institutions, FHI and FELIX laboratory. We hope for a candidate with an articulate interest in setting up new experimental installations for unique time-resolved studies employing IR-FELs.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biochemistry of Signal Dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

Our laboratory aims to reconstitute the initiation of autophagy using purified proteins. Autophagy is a process of regulated degradation that has been proven to play a wide range of roles in cellular housekeeping, including removal of damaged or unneeded organelles, intracellular pathogens, and protein aggregates. It is an essential biological pathway that promotes organismal health, longevity and helps combat cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theory and algorithms for structure determination from single molecule x-ray scattering images

Summary of PhD Program:

Single molecule X-ray scattering experiments with free electron lasers offer a new route to the structure determination of biomolecules. In addition, they hold the potential to not only determine the molecular structure, but also its dynamics. However, computing the structure from such data poses a highly complex mathematical problem, and new theoretical methods and algorithms are required. The main goal of this particular research project is to develop Bayesian methods to determine molecular structures and dynamics. It also offers the opportunity to work with data from the European XFEL facility at DESY and, depending on the interests of the applicant, many possible connections to other research areas like, for example, molecular dynamics or machine learning.
