3. Postdoctoral Positions in Stem Cell Biology and Motor Neuron Diseases

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to study motor neuron diseases using human pluripotent stem cells and animal models. The focus of this research is to explore the mechanisms underlying axonal degeneration of human neurons in pluripotent stem cell-based models of motor neuron diseases (Nature Biotechnology 2005, 23: 215-221; Cell Research 2013, 23: 378-93; Brain 2022, doi: 10.1093/brain/awab488) in the Regenerative Medicine and Disability Research (RMDR) laboratory. The RMDR lab is partially supported by the Blazer Foundation and aims to increase the quality of life of patients with disabilities. The trainee will gain broad exposure to state-of-the-art stem cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, and system biology. The trainee will also have the opportunity to learn and collaborate with researchers in the bioengineering field.

4. Postdoctoral Positions in Metastasis & Mechanochemical Signal Transduction Research – Er Lab

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Ekrem Emrah Er in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at University of Illinois at Chicago. We have a strong focus on the emerging concept of mechanochemical signal transduction (mechanotransduction) as a metastatic trait. This work builds on the principal finding that breast and lung cancer cells disseminated to secondary organs such as lungs and the brain utilize the vascular endothelium as a solid substrate to receive mechano-chemical signals, such as substrate stiffness, cell adhesion, spreading and actin cytoskeletal remodeling and in turn activate transcription factors such as YAP and MRTF (Er et al., 2018, Nature Cell Biology) but activation of such transcription factors can also make cancer cells vulnerable to attack by cytotoxic T- and natural killer cells by modulating cancer cells’ stiffness (Tello-Lafoz et al., 2021, Immunity).
