University of Helsinki, Finland invites multiple online application for Postdoctoral Positions in various research areas. Candidates interested in Postdoctoral Fellowships can check the details and may apply as soon as possible.
1. Postdoctoral Positions in atmospheric and analytical chemistry
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
The post-doctoral researcher will work in the ‘Polar and Arctic atmospheric research’ -group led by Prof. Mikko Sipilä and Aerosol technology group lead by Dr. Juha Kangasluoma, as well as at Karsa for half of the project. The project focuses on developing new chemical ionization mass spectrometry based instruments that are aimed at characterizing both the gas and particle phase composition. The duties of the doctoral researcher are to create the relevant CFD models and perform laboratory experiments to validate the instrument performance and develop it further. Teaching can take up to 5% of annual working time of 1612 hours.
Application Deadline: 1.11.2022
2. Postdoctoral Positions in neurophysiology of sleep and pain
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
Neuropathic pain affects up to 8% of the general population and is one of the most challenging pain conditions to treat due to poor efficacy of the currently available drugs and comorbidities, particularly sleep disorders, which are insufficiently addressed in pain management. On the molecular level, both sleep and pain are under circadian control. As adaptation to 24h environment on Earth, our internal circadian clocks are reset daily to precisely 24h and disruptions in this pattern have been reported in sleep disorders, frequent in chronic pain. However, it is currently not known whether the clocks are disrupted also in painful conditions. The main aim is to access the effects of circadian disruption on pain intensity both in experimental models and in clinical cohorts. This may allow to establish the novel chronotherapeutic approaches for pain relief.

3. Three Postdoctoral Positions on Social Inequalities in Population Health
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
An appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree in Demography, Public Health, Sociology, Data Sciences, Population genetics or other relevant field, have strong quantitative methods skills and an excellent command of written English. The default assumption is that the degree requirement must be met by the beginning of the employment. The applicant’s research interests should be aligned with the goals and the broad research areas of the research group.
Application Deadline: 31st October 2022
4. Postdoctoral Positions in Social Scientific Biodiversity Research
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
We are looking for highly motivated and skilled researcher with a PhD degree (or a final stage PhD researcher). An ideal candidate has experience in biodiversity, qualitative research methods, and EU’s policies (CAP, Green Deal/Farm to Fork, EU biodiversity strategy). Other combinations of social science expertise are also considered. The postdoctoral researcher will be appointed for a fixed-term 4-year contract to work in a Horizon Europe funded project entitled Advanced biodiversity monitoring for results-based and effective agricultural policy and transformation (BioMonitor4CAP) starting from the 1st of December 2022. The project aims to develop, test, and support implementation of effective, affordable, and reliable methods, tools, and technologies to monitor biodiversity of agricultural areas or farmland.

5. Postdoctoral Positions in modelling the climate change mitigation potential of the forest sector
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
The main responsibility is to produce a state-of-the-art estimate of the amount of fossil emissions avoided when preferring wood-based products over non-wood substitutes in Europe. This involves, in particular, considering the general decarbonization of the economy, which will influence the potential of the forest sector to avoid further fossil emissions in the long run. The substitution impact estimates are used in scenario analyses in connection with the modelling framework of the ForestNavigator consortium as well as for national level estimates in REDEEM. The work also involves, for example, calculating carbon parity periods and comparisons to remaining carbon budgets in the effort to optimize between avoided fossil emission through wood use and increased forest carbon sinks through conservation and forest management.
Application Deadline: 23.10.2022
6. Postdoctoral Positions in Biodiversity Digital Twin project and eLTER research infrastructure
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
We are looking for an innovative person with good networking skills and capability to work in a large, international research project. Salary level follows the University general salary rules (teaching and research personnel, salary requirement level 5), and will be depending of personal qualifications and prior experience on related tasks. The contract will be full-time and fixed-term for 18 months with potential continuation of up to 6 months, starting as soon as possible, but latest in the beginning of 2023. The appointment starts with a probationary period of six months.
Application Deadline: 20 October, 2022

8. Postdoctoral Positions in Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Mobility
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to focus their research on modelling future sustainable mobility modes (automatization, electrification, improving the functionality of public transport and bicycling, developing the Mobility-as-a-Service concept), and their effect on the sustainability of the Helsinki Capital Region. The research will focus on developing machine learning methods for modelling and simulating different urban and traffic planning solutions and analysing their effect on the region’s sustainability. In addition, questions related to AI and ethics (in collecting the data, bias in data) or adaptation to changing mobility systems can be addressed in the research.
