Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
This position will be involved with UVEX low-mass, low-metallicity science (LMLZ) science. A main objective of UVEX is to find and characterize millions of local (z<0.3) star-forming LMLZ galaxies that are predicted to exist, but only a small fraction of which are currently known. The UVEX science case is described in Kulkarni et al. 2021. UVEX is developing new methods for finding LMLZ galaxies using a combination of data from UVEX and optical/IR facilities such as Rubin and Euclid, and potentially spectroscopic data from facilities such as DESI and PFS. This position presents an opportunity to enter the UEX mission in the early stages and help to define LMLZ science for the next decade. The position will be supervised and mentored by Prof. Daniel Weisz, who is in the UC Berkeley Department of Astronomy, and works closely with partners at SSL.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) has set ambitious goals for conserving and restoring biodiversity as well as mobilizing public and private sector action and finance to meet these goals. Coupled to this has been the emergence of mandatory (European Union’s [EU] Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive [CSRD]) as well as voluntary (Taskforce on Nature Related Financial Disclosures [TNFD]) reporting regimes. In addition, a nascent but developing market has emerged for biodiversity and/or net natural positive credits. The success of these initiatives in part will rely on providing actionable scientific information on biodiversity and natural capital at policy and market relative spatial and temporal scales. Big data and AI including but not limited to large language models (LLM) in combination with field data and remotely sensed satellite, acoustic, camera, and genetic data have a critical role to play in driving action.

The Cal Mania (CALM) Laboratory seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar Employee, with a focus on bipolar disorder. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be expected to contribute to research to study circadian disruptions in bipolar disorder, and whether dietary interventions can strengthen circadian rhythms and sleep, and thereby contribute to improvements in symptoms and quality of life. The Ultrafast Nano-Optics Group at UC Berkeley is interested in probing and controlling light-matter interactions in condensed matter systems, with an emphasis on novel physical phenomena emerging in nanoscale structures and quantum phenomena in novel low dimensional materials. We develop and employ novel optical spectroscopy that simultaneously achieves ultrabroadband energy tunability, polarization control, nanometer spatial resolution, and femtosecond temporal resolution.
