1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Rhizosphere Biogeochemistry of Coastal Wetlands
Summary of PhD Program:
The candidates will join the strong and growing Soil Biogeochemistry group studying the interactions of minerals, microbes, and organic matter in the face of climate change. The successful candidate will perform research on rhizophere biogeochemistry within salt marsh soils threatened by sea level rise. Specifically, this project aims to determine how oscillatory drivers (tidal oscillations and diel cycles) influence carbon processing and storage in the rhizosphere of salt marsh wetlands. A particular focus is the investigation of mineral and redox constraints on microbial carbon metabolism in the rhizosphere.
Application Deadline: 31.01.2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental and Behavioural Research
Summary of PhD Program:
Expected start date position: Preferably between 01.01.24 – 01.06.24 or by agreement. Contract duration: The initial contract is one year. The contract is twice renewable for two years, and thus the maximum funding period is five years.
Application Deadline: 8 of January 2024

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Fluid Mechanics
Summary of PhD Program:
85 % will be dedicated to research on a PhD thesis on colloidal/bacterial filtration by confined and hetero- geneous media. This will be achieved by developing novel porous microfluidics devices (also fabricated with different materials) to understand i) how a porous medium microscopic structure determine the filtration of a flowing colloidal/bacterial suspension filtration and ii) how filtration dynamics affects (via clogging) the flow through such porous micro-structure. The physical, biological and chemical properties will be tuned independently. Using pumps, pressure controllers and time-lapse video-microscopy, flow experiments through these heterogeneous structures will be performed to quantify how transported particles are retained by the solid walls of the micro-structure up to clogging the individual pores imposing a feed-back on the transported suspension.
Application Deadline: Open until filled
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microbially-driven processes in porous media
Summary of PhD Program:
85 % will be dedicated to research on a PhD thesis on the role of porous system physical structure affecting the development of biofilm architectures, under dynamical flow conditions. This will be achieved using novel microfluidics devices (fabricated with ad-hoc materials including optode sensors). Particular attention will be devoted to study the role of resources limitation (e.g. nutrients and electron acceptors, as oxygen) on the spatial structure of growing sessile bacterial colonies within confined micro-structures to understand how resources get limited by growing bacterial colonies and how this affects their spatial organization. The candi- date will be trained in cutting-edge microfluidics and time-lapse video-microscopy techniques.
Application Deadline: Open until filled
