1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Remote scalable assessment of sprint biomechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

Those involved in talent identification within team sports are increasingly aware of the need to identify talented youngsters on the basis of their potential to be the best players in the future rather than on their current abilities. We know that the factors affecting sprint performance change with biological maturity of the athlete. Normative ranges for particular stages of development are yet to be established for American Football athletes, and an understanding of the factors affecting transfer of sprinting skill to sport-specific contexts is further lacking. This is of particular importance given known differences in sprinting technique between specialist sprinters and team sport athletes.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Reinforcement learning of safety critical automatic controllers

Summary of PhD Program:

In recent years, the advent of deep neural networks and deep reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms for systems with continuous state and action spaces provides a new, automatic approach to design controllers. But RL techniques typically have no guarantees on their behaviour to ensure stability or safety. Therefore, this PhD project will investigate how to apply RL safely in an emerging control application typically approached with MPC, such as control of floating offshore wind turbines, fuel-saving adaptive cruise control systems for road vehicles, or virtual coupling of railway vehicles.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in electromagnetic environment in defence scenarios

Summary of PhD Program:

The successful candidate will be responsible for integrating and further adapting Deep Reinforcement Learning State-Of-The-Art algorithms to the RF block chain. This will enable leveraging the combined forces of modern deep neural network architectures with the flexibility and robustness of cutting-edge techniques on the Reinforcement Learning paradigm. The aim of this approach is to optimize the selection of RF transmit chain block parameters, such as gain, frequency, modulation, subsystem matching etc, so that multiple waveforms can be delivered to specific targets with minimal interference to surrounding systems.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in novel drug formulations

Summary of PhD Program:

Novel pharmaceutical formulations go beyond the classical picture of small biological active molecules delivered in form of tablets, injections, or aerosols. New drug formulations often contain more complex molecules and delivery systems. Some of the latest Covid vaccines have provided contemporary examples of novel of mRNA-based active compounds delivered inside liquid nanoparticle (LNP) formulations. In general, RNA or DNA-based pharmaceuticals, antibodies, or combined formulations are currently developed at elevated speed for many disease applications.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Battery Electric Vehicle Efficiency

Summary of PhD Program:

This project is an exciting opportunity to work in Loughborough University with JLR as the industrial partner as they move towards full vehicle electrification. The focus of the project is on improving the energy efficiency of battery electric vehicles using advanced optimal control methods that incorporate machine learning technologies. The machine learning algorithms adapt to changes in vehicle performance and the many boundary conditions that influence the efficient and effective thermal management of the battery electric vehicle.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in thin film solar cells

Summary of PhD Program:

Solar photovoltaics is becoming the most critical source of electricity generation, with over a terawatt installed globally. Although the growth of solar has been extraordinary, it is a young technology with much more scope for improvement. This project aims to improve thin film solar cell performance and through advanced processing, including sublimation and sputtering, and world class materials characterisation techniques, including cathodoluminescence and electron microscopy. The project will involve the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST) and interaction with international laboratories and industry leaders.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in human-robot collaboration

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will explore how vision systems for people tracking can be combined with other physiological sensing methods to decode how people collaborate, and robots perform effective collaborative tasks. Emerging lifelong learning algorithms will be investigated to enable robotic agents to account for individual differences and temporal instabilities in the behaviour-intention mapping of their human collaborators. The resulting model is expected to allow robotic systems to anticipate human actions, predict risks, and adjust their behaviour to individual requirements over time. This is essential for many industrial tasks requiring physical human-robot collaboration (HRC), joint object manipulation, task coordination, teleoperation, and exoskeletons.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational modelling of water filtration systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The optimal design of membrane-based filters to remove harmful particles from water typically relies on time-consuming and expensive experimental work. In this project, you will develop mathematical and numerical methods to create digital twins of filters that allow for the rapid changing of design parameters such as membrane permeability and fluid density to optimize new designs without having to manufacture physical prototypes, thus reducing the time and cost of experimental testing. High computational efficiency and accuracy will be achieved by combining model order reduction methods (namely, proper generalized decomposition) and domain decomposition techniques.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in equipment to protect the physical safety of the female cricketer

Summary of PhD Program:

The laws, regulations and equipment specifications in cricket, like many areas of life, were originally designed and have evolved based on a predominantly male participant population. As the number of females participating in cricket continues to increase and knowledge of the differences between male and female physiology, biomechanics and other physical and psychological factors increases, there is a need to explore whether adaptations should be made to serve female participant safety best.
