1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physical Chemistry
Summary of PhD Program:
We are a young and ambitious group aiming to understand the fundamental chemical phenomena and reactivity in liquids and at interfaces that are of immense interest in many fields of basic and applied science and technology. We are located in a brand-new world-class research building and take advantage of the unique beyond state-of-the-art laser spectroscopy infrastructure developed over the years by the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Peter Hamm with whom we are closely interacting. You will have an opportunity to gain technical expertise and perform complex experiments that are available only in 1-3 places in the entire world.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Empowering AI to Explore the Space of Reasons
Summary of PhD Program:
Human belief systems are made up of networks of claims that are connected by logical relationships of entailment and contradiction – the so-called space of reasons. Recent developments in natural language processing and the philosophy of language have opened a unique window of opportunity to explore this space of reasons. Project AIR seizes this opportunity, aiming to develop a novel hybrid method in natural language inference to build a data-grounded representation of this space of reasons. Following a radically open approach and building on aesthetic insights, the project will develop an interface to allow the general public to interact with (and thereby keep updated) our representation of the space of reasons. The specific PhD research topic will be determined based on the candidate’s interests and expertise, in consultation with the supervisory team.
Application Deadline: 30 April 2024

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating Earth’s surface properties and their evolution using optical and radar observations
Summary of PhD Program:
Remote sensing is vital in documenting and monitoring environmental changes worldwide. Analyzing remote sensing data is complex, and finding solutions often requires custom-tailored algorithms. For what concerns environmental changes, most problems come with additional challenges, i.e., dealing with the inherent limitations of each sensor and platform and determining how to apply solutions at different scales. The research group aims to address these challenges and to make an impact in quantifying, understanding, and mitigating environmental changes in the cryosphere, forestry, and geomorphology.
Application Deadline: Open until filled
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Unlocking historical aerial image archive for understanding environmental changes
Summary of PhD Program:
The project aims to develop solutions to process historical aerial images to generate accurate elevation information. Exciting historical aerial images from the Trimetrogon flights over glacierised areas in Patagonia have been scanned and are available for use in the PhD project. Additional historical images will be purchased to exploit the potential of this data over other glacierised areas in the Chilean Andes and worldwide. Change detection analysis will subsequently be conducted to quantify glacier and proglacial changes in the observed area. This will include analysing DEMs from modern data acquired by very high-resolution airborne and satellite images.
