1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neurobiology and Pharmacology
Summary of PhD Program:
The goal of this doctoral project is to investigate whether it is important for bladder and bowel function if damage to nerve cells that release dopamine and related substances starts peripherally in the body or centrally in the brain. This is done by using the classic central 6-OHDA lesion model, where 6-OHDA, a toxin selectively damage dopamine cells, is injected into the brain (mimicking the disease that starts centrally – Brain-first phenotype). This will be compared with a new model, which you as a PhD student is expected to develop, where 6-OHDA is injected peripherally. This will cause neurodegeneration only in the peripheral and enteric nervous systems mimicking the Body-first phenotype. In these rat models, we will investigate changes in bladder and bowel function using in vitro and in vivo techniques and by histological evaluation.

Summary of PhD Program:
The main research objectives for this position will be to analyze distributions of N2O, elucidate pathways, quantify rates and identify environmental controls of N2O production and consumption, and identify the key microbes involved and their metabolic capabilities in the oxygen depleted waters of the eastern tropical Pacific and central Baltic.
