2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Atmospheric Sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a PhD student to work on a project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation called Feedbacks between a changing climate and vegetation: The role of volatile organic compounds and biogenic aerosols (CLIVE). The project will study the small fraction of atmospheric carbon that is taken up by plants and released back into the atmosphere as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It is a small fraction but it can have a big impact on climate as the VOCs are precursors for atmospheric organic aerosols. The overall aim of the project is to better quantify the current and future climate impact of forests via VOC emissions and their interactions with clouds, aerosols, and related feedbacks. We also aim for an improved understanding of the connections between VOC emissions, their composition and plant physiology and evapotranspiration.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Science

Summary of PhD Program:

This doctoral project involves application of nontarget mass spectrometry to novel passive air samplers deployed globally, including in the largest megacities of all continents, and in the most remote locations of the Arctic. The purpose is to demonstrate an airborne global early warning system for persistent mobile organic contaminants (ALARM project, funded by FORMAS).

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Science

Summary of PhD Program:

The Ph.D. project will to these ends contribute to increase the understanding of sources, transport and degradation processes of methane on the East Siberian Arctic Ocean using e.g. multi-isotope measurements of methane in existing seawater samples as well as by measurements of specific biomarkers and compound-specific isotope measurements that trace recent and past methane activity. These processes are key aspects of the Arctic carbon-climate link. The project offers involvement in studies of both the contemporary carbon/methane system as well as during earlier periods of abrupt change, through studies of longer sediment cores. The position involves active work on vacuum and gas handling systems, laser spectroscopy and gas chromatography – (isotope) mass spectrometry.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Inorganic Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Spin crossover refers to a transition between the high and low spin states of a transition metal ion, typically Fe2+. The transitions can be induced by temperature, pressure, or light, and find applications in e.g. molecular switching or sensing. Incorporating the Fe2+ ions in a coordination polymer typically improves the spin crossover properties, by enhancing the cooperativity between the individual metal centres. This project will explore the potential of the metal–cyanide coordination polymers known as Prussian blue analogues for spin crossover behaviour.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Inorganic Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Multiferroic materials combine magnetic and electric order and find uses in e.g. data storage, yet a considerable problem in this field is the lack of known multiferroics. This project tackles this challenge by aiming to develop new multiferroic materials based on the metal–cyanide coordination polymers known as Prussian blue analogues. While their magnetic properties have been relatively well studied, the prerequisite for ferroelectricity was only recently observed, and the project thus aims to combine these two properties.
