1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Improved Wastewater Pre-Treatment #1

Summary of PhD Program:

While BPMED has been shown to be efficient to extract ammonia from synthetic waters, some level of pre-treatments is needed in order to ensure that the process is sustainable when treating wastewater. The aim of this project is to explore various pre-treatment strategies to efficiently control fouling and optimise the BPMED process efficiency in terms of ammonia recovery and energy consumption. Various pre-treatment options will be trialled including but not limited to: 1) membrane filtration, 2) chemical precipitation, 3) gas sparging or degassing, and 4) ion exchange membrane. The BPMED technology has the potential to turn a waste into a resource based on circular economy.

Application Deadline: 30 June 2023

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ammonia Recovery from Wastewater #2

Summary of PhD Program:

Evaluate the technical feasibility of recovering NH3 from wastewater as a resource using BPMED and determine the achievable NH3 recovery efficiencies. The BPMED system will be designed and fine-tuned to improve ammonia recovery as ammonium hydroxide. Thereafter, the recovered ammonium hydroxide can be used as fuel or as an hydrogen carrier. This technology will contribute to green-house gas reduction. Specific objectives will include 1) evaluating the effect of process parameters on ammonia recovery and energy efficiency, 2) optimise the BPMED configuration and operating conditions for ammonia recovery and energy efficiency, and 3) identify the most appropriate end-user applications. The BPMED technology has the potential to turn a waste into a resource based on circular economy.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Long-term privacy with verifiable credentials

Summary of PhD Program:

Verifiable credentials (VC) have emerged as the future of digital identity and is attractive for the provision of digital health services in a secure and privacy-preserving manner. As a key pillar of self-sovereign identity, VCs providing users with more control over their personal information, enabling selective disclosure of attributes to access services and prove one’s identity. This ensures that digital health services can be provided in compliance with emerging privacy regulations such as the general data protection regulation (GDPR), consumer data right (CDR), health information portability and protection act (HIPAA) and others – specifically by adhering to the principle of data minimisation.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Powering Community Batteries for Power System Transition

Summary of PhD Program:

Australia has seen a rapidly distributed energy resource (DER) uptake in the past decade with one in four households having a rooftop solar system. However, DERs also bring operational challenges to power system operations due to network constraints. This iPhD project aims to address these challenges by developing a community battery eco-system by investigating community batteries’ functionalities in providing both market and network services in order to make the operation of community batteries sustainable to help enable Australia’s renewable transition.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydrogen as a Fuel for Agricultural Drying Equipment

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will explore the state-of-the art review of the hydrogen utilisation as a heating fuel source, heat plants, specifically for potential application in grain drying for Agridryer products. A mathematical model will be developed and validated for a number of selected products drying for schedule development (e.g. drying conditions) and equipment design and optimisation using hydrogen as a fuel source. The techno-economic and environmental benefits of such application will be quantified using chemical and process engineering methodologies and life cycle assessment software, tools and CSIRO in-house databases.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Useability Framework for Verifiable Credentials

Summary of PhD Program:

Verifiable Credentials (VC) is an emerging decentralised identity management (IdM) solution designed to address the privacy and security challenges arising from traditional IdM solutions. Benefits to both identity providers and end users from the application of VC is well established in the literature, however real-life use cases of VC technologies remain troublingly low. Preliminary research suggests that this discrepancy between the benefits provided, and lack of adoption of VC is due to usability challenges, specifically their perceived lack of usability. Given users’ natural preference for simplicity and ease of use, there is a general tendency in the industry to avoid requiring users to perform complex operations, learn the extra subject matter, or make difficult decisions.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Digital Agriculture

Summary of PhD Program:

Agriculture of the future will be digitally integrated at all stages of the value-chain, from understanding genetics and real-time monitoring of on-farm conditions, through to transport logistics and traceability. CSIRO and ANU are partnering to offer exciting opportunities for PhD students to work with scientists and engineers at the cutting edge of research using information science to address industry challenges, in the agricultural sector.
