1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematical Inverse Problems

Summary of PhD Program:

The InversePDE project studies inverse problems for partial differential equations (PDEs) and geometric inverse problems. A typical inverse problem is the determination of the coefficient functions of a PDE from indirect data. The project aims to obtain unique solvability and stability results for inverse problems and to develop solution algorithms for these problems that are based on machine learning. The project will study inverse problems for linear and non-linear hyperbolic and elliptic PDEs by applying analysis, differential geometry, microlocal analysis, and probabilistic methods. The project will also combine methods of machine learning, in particular neural networks, and manifold learning techniques, with the mathematical theory of inverse problems to invent new algorithms that are rigorously guaranteed to work.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in urban evolutionary ecology and education

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD researcher will participate in a project studying the adaptive benefits of urban evolution in butterflies, specifically Pieris napi (Green-veined White, Lanttuperhonen). Previous research has demonstrated evolutionary change in the seasonal plasticity of diapause (overwintering) for P. napi populations from Helsinki. In this project, we will test whether these changes found in Helsinki populations provide an adaptive benefit using a reciprocal transplant experiment, raising offspring of both urban and rural butterflies in both locations.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bio-Nano Interactions of Nanomaterials

Summary of PhD Program:

The appointment is in the Academy of Finland research project led by docent Shiqi Wang, at the Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology. The aim of the project is to develop a new assay using bioorthogonal reactions to study the role of cell surface glycan (a major component of cell membranes) in nanoparticle internalization. The successful candidate is expected to develop, optimize and validate the assay using different nanoparticles and cells. Your work will contribute to the fundamental understanding of how nanomaterials enter cells, which is of great importance for their biomedical applications.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Immunometabolism

Summary of PhD Program:

The Chen’s research group at University of Helsinki is seeking a motivated doctoral researcher to contribute to a core project funded by the Academy of Finland. The project aims to investigate the role of RNA splicing and tissue environment in shaping human macrophage diverse phenotypes during obesity. In this study, we will use cutting-edge single-cell and spatial omics technologies, develop novel computational methods, perform multimodal data analysis and integration, and experimental validation to uncover key factors steering the progression of obesity-associated metabolic disorders. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in computational data analysis and method development. Individuals with a strong interest and background in computational biology/bioinformatics are strongly encouraged to consider this opportunity.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in nanomaterials

Summary of PhD Program:

The student will focus on creating novel functional nanomaterials and two dimensional (2D) structures by employing ion implantation and ion irradiation. The student will join the project “Metal atoms on functional nanoplatforms” funded by the Research Council of Finland at the University of Helsinki. The project studies engineering of 2D nanomaterials and looks at the incorporation, properties and application of individual metal dopants in 2D transition metal dichalcogenide sheets. These layered materials act as functional nanoplatforms with versatile use in many fields from quantum optics to nanocatalysis.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in generative AI

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of the research is to model the user’s context from data (behavior, conversations, physiology) for personalising generative AI applications such as an LLMs chatbot. We previously modeled user’s context to improve recommender systems by computer screen monitoring. The new research will use in addition a variety of sensors to capture the physical world interactions in addition to the digital context and allow generative AI applications to access information of the current or past context of users.
