Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research, Switzerland invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.

Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in plant macroevolution and -ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

As part of a large SNSF (ERC) Advanced Grant project (Predicting hotspots of climate change impacts on ecosystems from an eco-evolutionary biome framework). This project aims at (1) defining and mapping global biomes, (2) projecting global change impacts on biomes, and (3) testing a novel eco-evolutionary biome theory. As part of this large effort, you will test novel theoretical foundations relevant to global biomes. First, you will assess to what degree biomes differ regarding evolutionary biome conservatism. Second, you will study the evolution of biome-typical functional plant traits and the relationship of the timing of trait evolution and biome conservatism. Finally, you will contribute to assess the linkage of the evolutionary history of biomes to biotic and abiotic stress tolerance of biome-dominant plants.

2. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in evolutionary genetics of forest trees

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a curious and hard working student who is passionate about evolutionary biology and likes statistics. She/he holds a Masters degree with training and research experience covering at least some of the following fields: evolutionary biology, population/quantitative genetics, plant/animal breeding, forestry or plant science, computational biology, statistics and data science. Experience in working with forests is not essential but is an advantage. The successful candidate should be fluent in English, have excellent written and oral communication skills and can work both independently and in a team. French or German knowledge are not necessary, but can be helpful. The PhD thesis will be supervised by Dr Katalin Csilléry (Evolutionary Genetics Group, WSL) and Prof Dr John Pannell (Department of Ecology and Evolution, Univer-sity of Lausanne).

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in ecosystem modelling

Summary of PhD Program:

You will investigate identifying novel thresholds for critical transitions and collapses of forest ecosystems thereby upscaling early warning signals of tree health decline and risk assessments for critical changes from the stand- to the landscape and country-level within the interdisciplinary SNF sinergia project UpScale. This position requires independent and creative thinking to formulate hypotheses and familiarity with plant ecophysiology. Proven experience in forest ecosystem modelling applying eco-evolutionary optimality-based light use efficiency models is a prerequisite for the position and needs to be elaborated on in the written application.
