1. Fully Funded PhD Position in link between chronic kidney disease and cardiac dysfunction
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will study the mechanisms underlying chronic inflammation in cardiorenal disease. Our work has shown that dysfunctional microtubules lead to cardiomyocyte contractile malfunction and heart failure (PMID: 34040253, Altmetric impact 856), an emerging research topic. This project will use multidisciplinary approaches (biochemistry, cell biology, human induced pluripotent stem cell and etc.) to investigate the regulation of microtubule-dependent mechanisms in cardiorenal diseases.
Application Deadline: 1 October 2023
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in prostate cancer
Summary of PhD Program:
This project aims to identify novel genetic determinants that mediate the synergistic response to DNA damaging agents and API combination in prostate cancer, defining their mechanism of action and validating the clinical relevance of these pathways in non-HRD patients. Techniques relevant to the project will include, but not limited to: cell culture, including primary cell culture, gene editing using CRISPR-Cas9, cell survival assays, immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing, ChIP and ATAC sequencing.
Application Deadline: 6 October 2023

3. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
The Department of Biochemistry provides enthusiastic support for early career scientists who wish to establish their own research programmes and labs through career development fellowships. Synergy with our current research groups is important to us. We are particularly interested in recruiting in the following research areas:
Computational biology/AI DNA and chromatin biology RNA biology Molecular microbiology Plant biochemistry and bioenergy, Synthetic biology/Bioengineering
Application Deadline: 31 October 2023
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in African American short fiction and magazines
Summary of PhD Program:
The project aims to generate new perspectives on the history of short story writing in US magazines. The British Library holds an important collection of American magazines with a tradition of publishing short fiction. The doctoral project will explore the literary, cultural, and historical contexts of these collections, with a particular focus on African American short fiction in the mid-twentieth century. Applicants are required to provide a research proposal which might centre, for example, on a case study of a single author; a case study of a particular magazine; a synchronic study of African American magazine fiction in a larger media or cultural context; a diachronic account of mid-twentieth century magazine fiction in the development of African American literature.
