1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Muscle epigenetics and long-term physical outcome after critical illness

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will address the hypothesis that the development of epigenetic changes in muscle may contribute to the long-term persistence of weakness in ICU survivors, which in turn may provide a new target for therapeutic intervention. Epigenetic mechanisms lead to functionally relevant changes in gene expression without altering the genetic code and have been implicated in permanent effects of transient environmental hazardous exposures/stressors on health. The most stable epigenetic change is DNA (de)methylation, which can persist for years and has been associated with long-lasting alterations in gene expression. Others include histone modification and expression of non-coding RNAs.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in comparing relations among psychological constructs across groups

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD-project is part of an ERC Starting Grant that aims to develop novel mixture SEM methods for finding such clusters. For doing so, differences in how the psychological constructs are measured by the questionnaire items – for example, differences in item interpretation or translation – should be unraveled from the differences in the psychological relations of interest. This becomes especially challenging when the measurement model – indicating which questionnaire items measure which psychological construct – is not known a priori (i.e., it is exploratory rather than confirmatory).

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in comparing relations among psychological constructs within groups

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD-project aims to develop novel mixture SEM methods for finding clusters of subjects within groups that have the same latent relations. In this way, one can study how the groups differ in terms of these relations and how they differ within the group. For instance, it may be that, in one country, all inhabitants are homogenous in terms of what determines life satisfaction, whereas, in another country, the inhabitants strongly differ in this respect. For finding such clusters, differences in how the psychological constructs are measured by questionnaire items – for example, differences in item interpretation or translation – should be unraveled from the differences in the psychological relations of interest.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in

Summary of PhD Program:

Human emotions underpin successful relationships with others. To monitor, or also influence, the course of interactions with others, it is very important to have a good understanding of your interaction partner’s emotions. After all, those emotions indicate what a particular event means for your interaction partner’s motives/goals and how your partner will relate to the event. However, there is a lot of research that shows cultural differences in emotions, which hinder emotional understanding in an intercultural interaction and thus also hinder the establishment of intercultural relationships. This project investigates whether awareness that emotions are culturally variable leads to better emotional understanding and greater perceived relationship quality.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in digital manufacturing

Summary of PhD Program:

Performance variability of nominally identical gearboxes is often observed in industry after production and/or assembly of a gearbox. One of the main reasons for this variability is the presence of manufacturing variations. Traditional gear design manuals and/or software based on international standards lack the resolution required to include the influence of factors such as (within-tolerance) surface roughness or (within-tolerance) geometrical deviations. In this context, the proposed thesis will focus on developing manufacturing variations measurement methodologies and prediction models to be used for robust design with respect to manufacturing variations and assembly conditions.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in The contribution of neophyte species to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning

Summary of PhD Program:

Accelerating climate change is moving ecosystems rapidly beyond the bounds of historical variability. Many of the traditional conservation approaches trying to maintain a status quo are no longer effective. Rather than resisting change, we need to guide transforming ecosystems towards preferred ecological outcomes. Assisted migration, the active translocation of species to mimic range expansion under climate change, is a widely proposed adaptive management strategy. But it is also controversial, as it disrupts long-held views on biological conservation. Focusing on risks and ignoring benefits has hampered scientific research on assisted migration and halted necessary conservation innovation.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in MSCA Doctoral Network PARASOL

Summary of PhD Program:

This Doctoral Researcher will develop a characterization method to measure the absorption of multiple materials under different electromagnetic conditions. The measurement results of these materials will directly lead to a very specific guidelines on how and when to apply these materials within the framework of the SSbD approach. Containing the electromagnetic emissions within a confined space is mostly achieved by implementing shielding materials like board level shields, gaskets, etc. Despite their efficiency, some downsides exist (e.g., heat conduction, space, etc.) by implementing these materials. Another solution is to employ specific absorbers on the radiating parts directly to decrease their emissions.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Statistical methods for intensive longitudinal dyadic data

Summary of PhD Program:

The use of intensive longitudinal approaches to investigate dynamic processes that shape and characterize dyadic relationships (e.g., romantic relationships, child–parent relationships) has become increasingly popular in recent years. Intensive longitudinal dyadic data are often collected by asking both partners of a dyad to report on their experiences multiple times a day for an extended period of time, or alternatively, by repeatedly assessing partners’ subjective experiences and/or physiological states during a lab experiment. Even though dyadic IL designs are already part of the toolkit of behavioral sciences researchers, key questions such as how many dyads should a study include, or for how long and when should participants be measured remain partially unanswered.

26. Fully Funded PhD Position in neural basis of thermoception

Summary of PhD Program:

Thermoception refers to the sensation of temperature differences derived from heat flux. It is a particular modality of interoception, which covers all sensations related to the state of the body. There is accumulating evidence that interoception contributes to how social cues are perceived and interpreted, i.e. social cognition. Deficits in social cognition are a hallmark of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by behavioral changes but also thermoceptive deficits. Importantly, all these concepts (thermoception, interoception, social cognition and FTD) share a neuroanatomical basis in which the insular cortex plays a key role.

30. Fully Funded PhD Position in early mathematical development and metacognition

Summary of PhD Program:

There is nascent evidence that children’s metacognitive skills are a solid and reliable predictor of their future mathematical achievement. Metacognitive skills refer to ongoing self-regulating processes that people use to monitor and control task performance (e.g., realize when you make an error; decide when to additionally check the answer to a particular question). In this international project in collaboration with the Educational Neuroscience Unit of the University of Graz (Austria; https://psychologie.uni-graz.at/en/educational-neuroscience/) we aim to investigate more systematically the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying these metacognitive skills during the solution and learning of arithmetic in children and adults.

31. Fully Funded PhD Position in ‘Meaning and Material’

Summary of PhD Program:

The research looks into the church building boom in Belgium during the 1960s, with a particular focus on the novel building materials and construction methods that were used in the roof structures of these buildings, such as laminated timber, prestressed concrete or steel ‘space frames’. Such structures allowed for large, open spaces and were often left exposed as an explicit token of modernity. Today, the future of these church buildings increasingly depends on their potential to accommodate new uses. Yet, when measures are taken to enhance the stability or energy performance of these structures, their historical significance, heritage value and spatial qualities are often jeopardized.

34. Fully Funded PhD Position in social psychology

Summary of PhD Program:

You will work on the project “Does feeling holier than others make one more or less moral? The effect of the belief in moral self-superiority on moral judgment, action, and sanctioning”, financed by FWO (grant number G052023N). Most people believe that they are morally better than others. For example, they believe that they are fairer, more just, less hateful, and less vindictive than average. However, little is known about the effects of this belief on how people judge morally good or bad behavior, on their choices in situations where their moral norms are at stake (e.g., when they can cheat in a competition), and on the extent to which they reward morally good actions and punish morally bad actions of others.

35. Fully Funded PhD Position in wind-farm flow modelling for energy forecasting

Summary of PhD Program:

In recent years, offshore wind energy development has moved towards the deployment of (very) large wind power farms. A wind farm can consist of hundreds of wind turbines (WTs), each of capacities of 10MW and higher, with total capacities of the order of more than a GW. In the next decades, Europe has the ambition to install up to 330GW in its offshore basins, increasing the installed offshore capacity by more than a factor ten. With new turbine designs that increase in size, wind will be harvested at higher altitudes than before; with large farms, cluster effects, such as blockage and wind-farm wake become more important. At these scales, the flow features dominating wind-farm efficiency are not yet well understood, leading to large errors and uncertainties in current forecasting models, as well as many new opportunities in optimizing wind-farm operation.

36. Fully Funded PhD Position in vitamin D receptor

Summary of PhD Program:

In the current project, we therefore aim to investigate the process of vitamin D-mediated transcriptional repression both in vivo and in vitro, using transgenic mouse models and cell culture systems in which the VDR can only transcriptionally repress gene expression. This approach allows us not only to answer long-standing questions on the mechanisms of transcriptional repression, but also to gain novel insights in VDR-regulated transcriptional networks. Previous transcriptome analyses revealed that vitamin D-mediated transcriptional repression regulates genes involved in mineral transport and energy homeostasis, which results in a severe form of rickets and resistance to diet-induced obesity.

Summary of PhD Program:

People’s views of social groups (e.g. age, gender, professional, religious and ethnic groups) do not only manifest themselves in what they say or write about those groups, but also in how they express it. With most readers and listeners paying more attention to the contents than to the wording of verbal communication, the wording can imperceptibly affect how readers and listeners think about the described group(s). An important but as yet understudied aspect of the wording of claims about social groups is their comparative format the extent to, and the manner in which claims explicitly state that an intergroup comparison is being involved. 2. Fully Funded PhD Position in pain hyperalgesia

Summary of PhD Program:

Patients suffering from chronic pain may show hypersensitivity to non-nociceptive sensory stimuli. By using experimental models inducing pain hyperalgesia, we observed that such hypersensitivity appears also in an experimental context, along with increased sensitivity to nociceptive stimuli (Torta et al., 2017). The relationship between nociceptive and non-nociceptive hypersensitivity is still unclear, as not fully elucidated are the mechanisms behind multisensory hypersensitivity in the pain context.

This FWO-funded Junior Research project aims to investigate, by testing different theoretical perspectives (see also Torta et al., 2018): 1. The relationship between nociceptive and non-nociceptive hypersensitivity; 2. The mechanisms leading to non-nociceptive hypersensitivity. In line with the tradition of the lab, the PhD candidate will make use of behavioral and psychophysiological techniques (including, but not limited to, high-density EEG, and skin conductance) to answer these questions.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in energy homeostasis

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in energy forecasting

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in geomorphology

Summary of PhD Program:

Terraces form an integral element of the Mediterranean landscape. Despite their widespread occurrence, the history of terraces has remained poorly understood due to problems with accurately dating their construction and modification over time and determining past cultivation practices for which they were used. This has hampered broader research on the histories of terraced landscapes, examining when and why rural communities developed them and how their long-term investment choices have shaped these landscapes.

This project presents an innovative study of terraces in Anatolia and Cyprus to investigate to what extent they constituted a sustainable and resilient land management strategy for past Eastern Mediterranean communities. It relies on a pioneering combination of prospection and dating techniques, as well as geoarchaeological and archaeobotanical research, and geomorphological and agronomical modelling methods, to revolutionize our understanding of past terrace systems. Although applied to specific parts of the Eastern Mediterranean, the approach and methods are intended to be generic in application.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mapping Polycentric Urban Development

Summary of PhD Program:

The overall objective of this research project, funded by the Flemish Fund for Scientific Research (FWO), is to innovate the scientific literature on urban polycentricity by developing a web cartography tool mapping the spatial conditions of polycentric urban development. The general idea underlying urban polycentricity is fairly straightforward: the term is used to refer to territories with multiple, proximately located (sub)centers and characterized by balanced development. This general idea is, however, also vague and lends itself to confusion: there are many ways in which territories , multiple , (sub)centres , proximate , balanced , and development can be conceptualised, operationalised, and mapped.

Summary of PhD Program:

You will investigate and develop interactive and digital structural design methodologies to facilitate the structural design process. The aim of the investigated methodologies and developed digital interfaces (tools) is to enable structural designers to design resilient structures (buildings, bridges, structures…) in an informed way and to support decision-making. Resilient structures in this perspective are structural systems that have structural redundancy for future changes in the applied external loads or changes in the structural layout itself. The methodology should not only be able to inform designers when designing new structures, but should also be applicable to existing buildings to determine the extent to which these buildings are able to cope with future changes and what the best strategies might be.

33. Fully Funded PhD Position in Programming Languages

Summary of PhD Program:

Developer productivity and software performance are two key properties of software development that are hard to achieve simultaneously. The former requires rich layers of abstraction and highly reusable, context independent code. In contrast, the latter aims at code without generic overhead or indirections that is highly specialized. General-purpose optimized compilation can automatically improve the performance of high-level programs, but is still far from optimal. Much more promising are code generation techniques that can be employed in “active libraries” to offer high-level programming interfaces, and exploit knowledge of the problem domain and of the code structure to generated highly tuned code.

34. Fully Funded PhD Position in SUPERSTARS-3D project on massive stars

Summary of PhD Program:

Observations and theory show that the radiation-dominated atmospheres of massive stars are highly complex, multi-dimensional systems. However, whereas 3D model atmospheres of sun-like stars have already been on the market for a while, for hot, massive stars we still rely solely on results derived from (inadequate?) 1D simulations. This limits our knowledge of the basic physics of massive stars and our capacity to correctly interpret observations, thereby also affecting the large number of astronomical fields that rely on a firm understanding of the massive-star life-cycle. The time is now finally ripe to change this!

Specifically, within the project we will develop first 3D unified models of hot, massive stellar atmospheres with winds. These pioneering models have the potential to significantly improve our physical understanding of massive stars, to revolutionize modern analysis and interpretation of massive-star spectra, and also to derive novel constraints on evolution and end-of-life massive-star models.

35. Fully Funded PhD Position in footbridges

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims at the development of an integrated structural optimization approach for footbridges that simultaneously considers static and dynamic loads. In current practice, footbridges are generally designed based on static loading considerations only. Since these static loads are relatively low, they can be made very slender, which makes them susceptible to human induced vibration. For this reason, a verification of the vibration levels is needed once the static design has been elaborated. When the levels are too high, the problem is mostly solved by adding tuned mass dampers (TMDs).

37. Fully Funded PhD Position in Structural Health Monitoring

Summary of PhD Program:

Structural failure in the aerospace, civil and energy sectors can be life threatening for users/passengers and financially catastrophic for operators and the manufacturer. This is the main reason for which critical structures (i.e. aircrafts, wind turbines etc.) spend large part of their life cycle under inspection with the accompanied costs being significant. On-line detection and characterization of minor failures within complex (composite as well as 3D printed) structures can lead to a radical reduction of this cost and eventually cheaper and safer transport and energy production.
