2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing compact beamsteering optics for semi passive solar tracking systems

Summary of PhD Program:

Current solar panels work most efficiently when directly facing the sun and ideally would tilt and rotate throughout the day to stay aligned with the sun’s position. This is not practical when integrating solar panels onto rooftops or vehicles. This project prioritises the design (via software simulation) of compact optics to filter, re-orientate (called beamsteering) and focus the incident sunlight for optimum performance from solar panels throughout the day. These beamsteering optics can be made from nano-scale patterns which tailor the refractive index layers to refract the light as needed.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Solving stormwater overflows through spatial catchment optimisation, Engineering and Computer Science

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this PhD project is to reduce stormwater spills and flooding by developing an AI/ Machine Learning driven optimisation tool. This tool will enable research to identify catchment-scale stormwater management strategies using readily available data. Storm water inflow to combined sewer systems reduces network capacity and increases the risks of environmental pollution, overflows, treatment costs and flooding. Risk is exacerbated by climate change, urban growth and an increasing regulatory and public spotlight on stormwater management.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Wireless Implantable Micro-Coil for Precise Control of Neuronal Excitability

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project involves the development of wireless implantable micro-coil technology for precise and graded control of neuronal excitability through magnetic stimulation. This interdisciplinary research lies at the intersection of electronic engineering, neuroscience, and materials science and aims to advance neuromodulation technologies for novel therapeutic strategies targeting neurological disorders.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Size Optimisation and Operational Performance Evaluation of Phase Shifting Transformers, Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Phase Shifting Transformers (PSTs) are critical components of modern electrical grids, offering powerful control over power flow and enabling the efficient management of electricity transmission. As the global energy landscape transitions towards renewable energy sources, the need for advanced power control devices like PSTs becomes increasingly critical. PSTs, with their ability to adjust phase angles and redistribute power flows, provide a solution to the challenges in accommodating the variability and unpredictability of renewable energy sources. However, the conventional design of PSTs has limitations of massive size and certain operational constraints such as core saturation. This project seeks to address these limitations by exploring innovative approaches to PST design, with a particular emphasis on size optimisation.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sustainable Manufacturing towards Circular Economy in Digitalize Era, Phd in Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The overarching goal of this Ph.D. project is to adapt parametric life cycle assessment techniques to design a supply chain (systems level) enabling Circular Economy principles. A decision support system has to be developed linking P-LCA technique and verify different scenarios using the simulation techniques. This research aims to push the boundaries of sustainable manufacturing capabilities by optimizing the various dimensions, incorporating product and process design requirements with supply chain in digital manufacturing enabled environment.
