1. PhD position on static and dynamic optimization for transport and logistics

Summary of PhD Positions:

We are looking for a PhD candidate with a background in operations research, mathematics, econometrics, industrial engineering, or computer science. Especially candidates with the interest to work on the interface of optimization and AI are highly encouraged to apply. The project is centered around the development of new optimization methods (using machine learning, operations research, AI, deep reinforcement learning) needed for solving challenging operations management problems in, for example, retail operations, transportation, and logistics. Project Description: Organizations frequently make decisions while facing an uncertain future. For example, inner-city stores are replenished by trucks before sales are known, and ICU beds are reserved each day before COVID-19 patient inflow is known. Making good decisions is essential for organizations and society. For example, congestion and pollution from trucks in inner-cities are reduced, and COVID-19 and regular patients receive better healthcare. In this project, we focus such problems that require both a structural decision and daily dynamic decisions. The structural decision, for instance the reservation of ICU capacity for the coming days or weeks, has to consider the structure of the daily dynamic decisions, for instance the allocation of patients between hospitals.

2. 3 PhD positions on social tipping dynamics in sustainability transitions

Summary of PhD Positions:

Would you like to do research that helps accelerate the energy transition? We offer 3 fully funded 4-year PhD positions on the research team of the ERC project FAST: Fostering social tipping dynamics to accelerate sustainability transitions. The FAST project aims to explain and model social tipping dynamics and interventions in energy transitions. Existing models that form the basis for energy transition scenarios typically do not include the positive feedbacks resulting from the interactions between civil society and energy transitions. Yet these interactions have been identified as important drivers and barriers of energy transitions and as crucial in triggering the social tipping dynamics that can accelerate the energy transition. Social tipping dynamics in energy transitions occur when a small change or intervention has a large effect on emission reductions. As a PhD student, you will do empirical research into social tipping dynamics using discourse analysis and data analysis techniques, looking into solar, wind and nuclear energy in different countries. You will use this data to create simulation models of social tipping dynamics.

4. PhD Position “Smart and analyzable scheduling solutions for real-time systems”

Summary of PhD Positions:

The project focuses on designing analyzable machine-learning (ML) based scheduling solutions for real-time systems (i.e., systems that require both functional and temporal correctness). What makes this project distinct from the existing learning-based scheduling solutions is that it focuses on the analyzability of the solution so that the result can be used in safety-critical real-time systems, where the end-to-end worst-case response time (WCRT) of each system functionality must be smaller than its deadline to ensure the system’s safety. To reach this objective, the project focuses on designing scalable and accurate analysis techniques and tools to derive the WCRT of a learning-based scheduler. This can be achieved by defining effective system abstractions that allow performing a scalable yet accurate reachability analysis on the space of all possible system behaviors that could be observed under the proposed smart scheduler.

5. PhD on “Modelling and multiscale design of active mechanical metamaterials”

Summary of PhD Positions:

We are looking for a highly creative and motivated PhD candidate to join Mechanics of Materials section at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The position is in the group of prof. Marc G.D. Geers, and will be co-supervised by Ron H.J. Peerlings and Ondrej Rokos. Context. Metamaterials owe their name to unprecedented effective behavior that typically cannot be found in natural materials, such as being ultra-stiff & ultra-light, having auxetic behavior, or negative compressibility. Such behavior typically emerges from metamaterials’ micro-structural morphology rather than from the properties of individual material constituents. Recent trends in metamaterial design aim at their actuation, using, e.g., discrete mechanical, pneumatic, thermal, chemical, or electromagnetic actuation. Metamaterials thus offer a significant design space, which can be exploited in numerous engineering applications such as artificial muscles, medical robotics including minimum invasive surgery, bio-implants, soft robotics, or self-folding systems.

9. Call for PhD student: Temporalities of More-than-Human Care

Summary of PhD Positions:

With societal concerns related to sustainability and inclusivity, there is a need for alternative care relations beyond the dominant (often exploitative) relationship centered around human values and temporalities. Time as material for design, in relation to processes of aging and degradation, practices of repair, and more recently, characteristics of living materials all have been emphasized in design and HCI literature. However, time is often a taken-for-granted aspect of thriving with humans and nonhumans through care. The risk of not looking into the temporalities of more-than-human care is in overextending our (humans’) agency in the ecosystem which threatens the livelihoods of humans and nonhumans. This PhD project aims to investigate the temporalities of more-than-human care for designing with and/or living with living artifacts. Over the last two decades, design and HCI scholars have turned to live materials that grow, adapt, and regenerate, exploring novel forms of fabrication and co-habitation with nonhumans. Biological and AI-driven non-humans are increasingly mingled in conceptions of technological systems that are self-sustained by design or alternatively require humans to care for them and keep them alive over time. Pertaining to both trajectories is the need for posthumanism in conceptualizing more-than-human care.

10. PhD Position: Built cultural heritage: from diagnosis to intervention

Summary of PhD Positions:

The lack of timely diagnosis and appropriate intervention threatens the preservation of built cultural heritage. For instance, modern concrete heritage is now reaching an age when deterioration and corrosion become significant. Reinforced concrete structures have started to be built in the Netherlands in the early 1900s. A large number of the surviving early 20th century structures are now listed monuments or well-known community landmarks. Structures build after World WII are now coming into attention, and facing challenges in terms of material damage. The most common damage types applicable are carbonation- and chloride-induced corrosion. Recent research has brought attention to the accelerated damage to built structures due to increased temperatures and relative humidities, increased CO2 levels, and more frequent drying and wetting cycles which induce salt damage. After determining the type of damage through visual inspection, in most cases the cause of the damage is still not clear. For instance, the main type of damage and the most dangerous to the life and safety of the concrete structure is reinforcement damage. However, if the corrosion is due to chloride attack (38% of cases), carbonation (17%), matrix-induced effects such as shrinkage/expansion (14%), or a mixture of these, cannot be easily determined.

12. PhD position Intelligent network slicing management

Summary of PhD Positions:

Beyond-5G(B5G)/6G networks are expected to serve many applications (e.g., autonomous vehicles, remote surgery and digital twins) that pose stringent requirements on Telecommunications Network in terms of latency, data rates, reliability and availability. Thanks to the Network Slicing mechanism enabled by the network function virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) techniques, the B5G/6G networks exhibit immense potential for meeting these challenges posed by the stringent application requirements. In the last decade, there has been a significant progress in the area of network slicing for core networks and many new approaches/tools have been proposed. However, the emerging dominance of Mobile Edge computing (MEC) and its strong coupling with Radio access networks (RANs) require a complete rethinking of the Network Slicing mechanism considering wireless access. In particular, the integration of RAN, core networks and MEC brings new challenges for enabling dynamic end-to-end network resource allocation. The main objective of this PhD position is to explore novel methods/techniques to meet the end-to-end network slicing requirements considering both the core networking and wireless access. In particular, the application of novel machine learning techniques such as Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) will be explored by the PhD candidate.

13. PhD computational physical chemistry: modeling air-water interface

Summary of PhD Positions:

In physics, “plasma” is a special excited gas, sometimes named “the fourth state of matter”, which is generated by supplying sufficient energy to the gas. Low temperature atmospheric pressure plasmas are specific types of plasmas which are typically generated by applying electromagnetic fields to matter, and they are therefore not in thermodynamic equilibrium. In many cases, average electron energy is significantly higher than the energy of heavy particles. This allows plasma sources to produce a chemically rich environment very close to room temperature; a condition which enables the delivery of reactive species in a non-destructive and beneficial way to different surfaces, even to extremely heat sensitive ones, such as organic tissues. This is where, the new field of “plasma medicine” emerges which investigates the application of plasmas to biological targets for sterilization, wound healing, blood coagulation, drug delivery, cancer treatment, contamination control, food preservation, etc. The PhD candidate is expected to employ methods such as Density Functional Theory (DFT), and molecular dynamics (MD) to model air-water interface with the specific application of plasma medicine in mind.

14. PhD in Chemical Recycling of Polymers

Summary of PhD Positions:

No other man-made material has revolutionized social, industrial, as well as environmental aspects of humankind in such a short period of time as plastics. Polymeric materials can be found in almost every industrial sector ranging from food packaging to spaceships. Thus, a life without polymers as the ultimate resource of convenience seems unimaginable today. At the same time, effective recycling strategies are urgently required to tackle the issue of plastic pollution and to create the foundation of a sustainable society. Amongst established methods of plastic waste treatment, chemical recycling of polymers with the aim to recover the original monomeric species is highly sought-after. This recycling method allows for the production of fresh polymer products without loss of quality and resources. In this PhD project, you will develop innovative methods to recycle and/or upcycle traditional polymers as well as design novel polymeric structures that are more amenable to recycling (”design for recycling’’ approach). Your research will include the synthesis of smart monomers that can switch between polymerized and depolymerized states as well as introducing functional groups into polymeric backbones that can be cleaved under selected conditions. To enable efficient (de)polymerization reactions, you will use highly active and state-of-the-art photo- and organocatalysts.

15. PhD on Multiband Low Latency Optical Networks Node and Techniques

Summary of PhD Positions:

The H2020 5G PPP project B5G-OPEN targets the design, prototyping and demonstration of a novel end-to-end integrated packet-optical transport architecture based on MultiBand (MB) optical transmission and switching networks. MB expands the available capacity of optical fibres, by enabling transmission within S, E, and O bands, in addition to commercial C and/or C+L bands, which translates into a potential 10x capacity increase and low-latency for services beyond 5G. To realize multiband networks, technology advances are required, both in data, control and management planes. Concerning devices, these include new amplifiers, filterless subsystems, add/drop multiplexers, etc. Such technology advances complement novel packet-optical white boxes using flexible sliceable Bandwidth Variable Transceivers and novel pluggable optics. The availability of MB transmission will also lead to a complete redesign of the end-to-end architecture, removing boundaries between network domains and reducing electronic intermediate terminations. The control plane will be extended to support multiband elements and a ‘domain-less’ network architecture. The results will be shown in two final demonstrations exposing the project benefits from operator and user perspectives.

16. PhD on AI-based CS for Next Generation High Capacity Photonic Networks

Summary of PhD Positions:

The PhD project is in collaboration with KPN as part of the strategic co-operation between KPN and TU/e, TU/e-KPN flagship. The PhD project aims at investigating and demonstrating an AI-based automatic control of next generation photonics networks to support heterogeneous traffic growth from Mobile Access Network (5G and beyond) connected to Datacenters and edge computing nodes. The massive 5G cell deployments, datacenters, and edge computing nodes as well as novel applications with different requirements in terms of connectivity, latency and reliability is forcing operators such as KPN to deploy a large amount of networks elements and IT resources. Control and manage of such massive network elements and IT resources deployed in photonic networks becomes crucial to optimize and adapt those massive resources and match the heterogenous applications with different requirements as well as minimize their energy consumption. This will demand for novel low latency and scalable control systems. Autonomous operations and zero-touch networking are expected to enable a cost-effective and sustainable rapid photonic network growth. Zero-touch photonic networking is still in its early stages and requires the development of autonomous cognitive networking that entails closed-control-loop implementation collecting, analyzing, and making decisions on the photonic networks.

24. PhD on Brain-computer interfaces & the disruption of the concept of personhood

Summary of PhD Positions:

As part of the inter-university research consortium, “Ethics of Socially Disruptive Technologies (ESDiT)” Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in collaboration with UMC Utrecht and TU Delft are jointly seeking to hire a PhD student for a four-year project on “Brain-computer interfaces & the disruption of the concept of personhood.” Over recent years, rapid progress has been made in neurotechnology, including the ability to record and directly stimulate neural activity, with the potential to create increasingly effective brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Such emerging neuro-technologies encourage us to consider new ethical questions, and force us to question some of our ingrained ethical intuitions and concepts. Of particular interest is the question of ‘what constitutes personhood’? In answering this question, Western philosophical approaches typically focus on notions such as autonomy, independence, unity, control and speech. These ontological framings of personhood quickly spill over into the ethical domain – shaping our views about concepts such as moral standing, responsibility, and what it means to have a life worth living.
