1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nanofluid Heat Transfer

Summary of PhD Program:

The project focuses on liquid films formed by nanofluids on heated surfaces. The project will consider cases when heating from the surface is supplemented by external thermal and magnetic radiation sources. For this purpose, the Ph.D. candidate will synthesize magnetic nanofluids and characterize their thermophysical properties. The central part of the project aims at flow experiments with thin films of nanofluids. The experiments will consider how heat- and mass transfer in the films depend on the properties of nanofluids and the abovementioned external factors. The project’s overall goal is to develop empirical correlations for heat- and mass transfer in photomagnetic liquid films. The project will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Bergen (UoB), Department of Physics and Technology. The Ph.D. study program will be allocated at the UoB. The Ph.D. research fellow will closely collaborate with undergraduate and graduate students working in this direction during the experiments.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in climate change and plant-insect interactions on dwarf shrubs

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to address gaps in understanding about how multiple climatic factors affect dwarf shrubs and their associated insects in differing ecosystem types. In particular, the research will combine experimental techniques to test the impact of drought and warming on plants and their insect herbivores and pollinators, with long-term data analysis and simulation modelling. The successful candidate will supplement data from two long-running field experiments in boreal and alpine forest clearings in Kaupanger, and coastal heathlands in Lygra, and develop their own methods in understanding the importance of plant-insect interactions in these systems.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in geology and geohazards

Summary of PhD Program:

The position is linked to the project “HELis (Helicopter-borne ice radar measurement)”. The project aims to create new knowledge about the interactions between climate change and societal consequences. The project will use data on bed topography, ice thickness and volume from a selection of smaller glaciers in southern and northern Norway. The fieldwork will consist of measurements using ground penetrating radar. The results will provide us with new knowledge about runoff and drainage patterns of glaciers in southern and northern Norway, reveal possible geohazards when the glaciers melt, and allow us to map the subglacial landscape which will be used to model future scenarios for Norwegian glaciers as well as changes in meltwater drainage when the glaciers melts.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Battery Technology

Summary of PhD Program:

Due to the limitation of traditional battery charging method, battery charging speed cannot be very high. In this project, we have motivation and ambition to develop novel high speed battery charging method using batteries invented in our laboratory to shorten battery charging time significantly. In addition, battery charging and discharging process and mechanism modelling is important and crucial in this project. The two main objectives of this project are: (1) Develop of novel high speed battery charging method in laboratory; (2) Utilization of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to simulate charging and discharging process and mechanism of this novel battery charging method. High charging speed and short charging time are important for batteries applications in mobility devices in the market. This project will perform research work to solve the neck bottle charging speed problem in battery technology by developing brand new battery charging method using experimental and simulation techniques.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in SEMPER

Summary of PhD Program:

The primary objectives of SEMPER are to develop knowledge regarding lower secondary school students’ learning processes in mathematics, and to assess the effect of a professional development intervention-pilot on teachers’ differentiated instructions and students’ trajectories in mathematics. Secondary objectives relevant to the PhD position are to:
1. determine individual differences in students’ trajectories of self-efficacy and the cyclical relationship between self-efficacy and performance experiences, as well as key individual and group level factors associated with these processes
2. determine the relationship between teacher-student interactions and the development of students’ self-efficacy and performance trajectories as they learn new topics in mathematics.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in eliminating data silos in software systems

Summary of PhD Program:

Today, we have many stand-alone applications that are engineered to work with specific datasets and in specific environments. Even though these applications are useful, they are not ready to collaborate with other systems in a System of Systems (SoS) fashion. Among the various challenges that remain unresolved when building a SoS, a key challenge concerns interoperability when combining software and data from different organisations. In fact, in a SoS setting, different organisations represent data differently and often use in-house ad hoc software to deal with data; this lack of standardised solutions makes it challenging to combine and integrate data from different software-enabled systems.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in novel materials for green Hydrogen production

Summary of PhD Program:

The primary objective of the PhD project is to implement new nano structures and optimizing processes to develop high-efficient, environmentally stable, cost-effective, green hydrogen production technologies. Photocatalytic and photo electrochemical approaches for converting solar energy directly into Hydrogen are becoming promising candidates for future. This PhD research project will focus on developing and testing novel materials for photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. Project will also address on identifying key design criteria for large-scale photocatalytic hydrogen production.
