1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

This Ph.D. project is on the mineralization of CO2 by MgO and CaO minerals, and is funded by the Formas. The selected candidate will explore mechanisms of Mg- and Ca-carbonate formation on MgO and CaO (nano)minerals exposed to the atmosphere. This research aims to support direct air capture technologies for mitigating hikes in atmospheric CO2 levels, as well as advancing fundamental ideas on mineral growth. This work will make use of various spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction and possibly computational modelling techniques available at Umeå University. The candidate will integrate the Molecular Geochemistry research environment of the Department of Chemistry and work with various analytical platforms of the Chemical and Biological Center.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Applied Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The TEC-lab research environment (Thermochemical Energy Conversion Laboratory) at Umeå University is looking for an outstanding PhD candidate interested in how the local chemical environment of chromium, Cr, in secondary raw materials like ashes or biochars may impact phosphorus recovery. Cr in fertilizers is regulated both with respect to total concentration and oxidation state as its toxicity depends on its oxidation state. The complex matrix of ash fractions and biochars makes accurate determination of oxidation states for chromium near-impossible with conventional analysis. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment where chemistry, physics, and energy technology meet in advanced material characterization both in laboratory and at synchrotrons.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biophysical Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD student, you will be part of a research team that combines experimental methods and computer simulation to understand membrane protein transport and signalling processes. The focus is to develop novel structural biology techniques with the aim to understand membrane protein transport and regulation with applications in heart disease and antimicrobial resistance. The group has pioneered synchrotron-based time-resolved X-ray solution scattering of ATP-dependent protein reactions with significant contributions to the field both with respect to experimental design and high-performance computing protocols for data analysis, visualization, and interpretation.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematical Statistics

Summary of PhD Program:

Shape-constrained generalized additive models (SCAM) provide a general and powerful framework for nonparametric regression modelling with shape constraints, demonstrating their efficacy and practicality in numerous applications. The popularity of SCAMs lies in the attractive balance between applicability and interpretability. However, existing methods do not support models with large data sets, yet these are increasingly invaluable and important as technological advances across science and industry generate vast quantities of data. Moreover, efficient and robust computation is currently possible in the standard exponential family setting.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a PhD student excited to study how the brain regulates feeding behavior. Our group approaches feeding behavior on a molecular, neuronal circuit and behavioral level. We are particularly interested in how the brain integrates emotions, memory and metabolic signaling to encode mental states such as hunger and satiety. As a Ph.D. student in our group you will uncover novel neuro-molecular mechanisms by which the brain influences what we eat and how such mechanisms can be used to treat unhealthy eating habits and eating disorders like anorexia nervosa. We believe in fostering an environment where everyone has the support, freedom, and ability to answer the big questions in neuroscience. Doing your Ph.D. in our group will give you critical insight to why we eat in the way we do and a versatile platform for your future career.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Archaeology

Summary of PhD Program:

Third-cycle (PhD) level studies in archaeology at Umeå are undertaken under two broad themes: (a) archaeology and (b) archaeology specialising in environmental archaeology. Applications are welcome under either of these themes, as long as there is a clear and demonstrable connection to Arctic and/or Sub-Arctic Wetlands and some aspect of sustainable development. Applications including one or more of the following topics are especially encouraged:

  • Palaeoentomology, archaeobotany, palynology or other archaeological research methods (including methods development)
  • Long-term climate change (past, present, future) and threats to cultural heritage and landscapes (e.g. preservation of organic remains in wetlands, palaeoenvironmental reconstructions)
  • Sustainable development, sustainability and/or human-landscape interactions over long timescales

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Clinical chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science

Summary of PhD Program:

Our societies rely on computer systems, and increasingly so. Unfortunately, computer systems can be the target of malware. These malicious applications can be complicated pieces of software developed by well-organized criminal gangs or by government agencies to attack anything from private computers and smart phones to critical national infrastructures. There has been an increased interest in adapting and developing the latest machine learning methods for the purpose of malware analysis, and preliminary results are encouraging. The specific goals of this project include to develop novel machine learning methods to improve malware understanding.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a PhD student to join the Autonomous Distributed Systems (ADS) Lab at Umeå University (Sweden) to work on research into energy-aware Cloud computing. Cloud computing infrastructures are increasingly distributed, consisting of powerful centralized data centres connected with multiple geographically dispersed Edge nodes. They host Cloud applications, which are typically composed of multiple containerized services that can themselves be distributed and auto-scaled across the Cloud-Edge infrastructure fabric.
