1. Fully Funded PhD Position in VR for educators improving health literacy in young people
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD will follow a human-centred, iterative, co-design methodology within a Design-Test-Evaluate thesis structure. To deliver the research the PhD student will build direct relationships with schools and end-users such as teachers, students and school administrators. This will be supported through LifeLab, an established scientific engagement and literacy programme. Mixed methods analysis will be used to inform the design, development, testing and optimisation of new VR tools.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in metabolic adaptation in stress tolerance
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will dramatically impact the fields of drug resistant microbial pathogens, chemo-resistant tumours, and synthetic food engineering. We study novel mechanisms of rapid cellular adaptation to stress. We are primarily interested in how membrane less organelles coordinate real-time adaptability of cellular functionality, particularly metabolic responses. Some cells are not well equipped to deal with stress. These include neurons and aging cells in which we study neurodegenerative brain diseases. Other cells cause disease by being ‘too adaptive’ to stress. These include pathogens and cancer cells that acquire drug resistance. Chemoresistance is one of the greatest health and food production challenges of our time. This project will focus on finding novel mechanisms that can be targeted for therapeutic development.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of RF MEMS for 6G communication
Summary of PhD Program:
Radio-Frequency Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (RF-MEMS) switch between on and off state, not by controlling the current through the device like a field effect transistor, but by mechanically opening and closing the current path. The RF-MEMS devices are now of such sophistication that they can switch billions of times and are capable of carrying high currents of 1A and electro-magnetic waves at frequencies above 10GHz. The RF performance limitation is surprisingly not solely associated with the device itself but predominantly with the semiconductor Si substrate on which it is fabricated.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Learning to swim with ray-inspired sensing and morphing
Summary of PhD Program:
During your PhD, you will engineer a novel bio-inspired propulsion and control system inspired by rays. Rays have arrays of pressure sensors all along their wings (pectoral fins). These sensors provide information about the flow state over their wing. Sensor distribution differs between rays that undulate with small amplitude travelling waves and those that flap with large amplitudes. Your project will utilise a neural network to understand how actuation and sensing relate in a ray-robot capable of undulation and flapping.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in linking particle size to ocean carbon storage
Summary of PhD Program:
The size and shape of sinking particles is likely key to determining their remineralisation depth, as slower sinking particles are likely to be remineralised at a shallower depth. This leads to a “particle size-remineralisation feedback” hypothesis (Leung et al., 2021), such that under climate change-driven warming conditions plankton size structure shifts to smaller organisms, which leads to a shift to smaller sinking particles and so shallower remineralisation of organic carbon and nutrients. This latter would then increase nutrient availability in the upper ocean, which could drive increased primary production and carbon flux. The overall effect would be a dampening of the expected decline in the strength of the biological carbon pump as a result of climate change. If correct, then current IPCC projections, which omit this potential negative feedback, are overestimating reductions in future ocean carbon storage.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mapping ocean carbon storage from space to seafloor
Summary of PhD Program:
Recent studies (Cael 2021 L&O:L, Cael et al. 2021 GRL, Cael et al. 2018 GBC) suggest that this process, including its variability, can be predicted accurately from remote sensing data from Earth-observing satellites. You will use these published relationships and combine them with satellite data, along with other published relationships between ocean carbon transport and factors in the environment. Through this effort you will generate the first data-constrained estimate of how much carbon is transported into the ocean interior by plankton ecosystems, the variability of this process, and map these over space, depth, and time. You will then have ample opportunity to pursue further questions that arise from this project, or novel applications of the product that they have created. You will be embedded in a large international consortium project of world-class carbon cycle scientists and will have the opportunity to gain a variety of in-demand computational skills.
