1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomedical Sciences
Summary of PhD Program:
You will work on an exciting project, aiming to decipher the role of spatial chromatin organization in alternative isoform choice in the human brain. Isoform expression is highly cell type-specific, drives cell fate trajectories and influences drug responses. Despite research traditionally focussing on alternative splicing, use of alternative transcription start sites (TSSs) and termination sites (TTSs) accounts for the majority of transcriptional diversity in humans. Yet little is known about the mechanisms governing alternative TSS and TTS choice. We hypothesise that chromatin organisation is a central coordinator of such cellular decision-making across distinct cell populations.
Application Deadline: 27th of July 2023
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in photoelectrochemical sensors for nucleic acid-based sequences
Summary of PhD Program:
The overall goal of this PhD is the development of strategies to enhance the sensitivity of novel photoelectrochemical biosensors that will pave the way to the construction of affordable, robust, and user-friendly platforms for healthcare applications, i.e. cancer diagnosis and infectious disease diagnostics. Due to the integration of recognition bioelements (e.g. DNA/RNA, antibodies or aptamers), electrochemical biosensors are ideally suited for the selective determination of a wide variety of clinically relevant targets such as biomarkers, pathogens, etc. The detection of the biomarkers of interest will be achieved by taking advantage of the cost-effectiveness and sensitive detection provided by photoelectrochemical strategies. 17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantitative in situ electron microscopy of metal halide perovskite materials
Summary of PhD Program:
Light detection and emission are crucial for displays, medical and security scanners. Given the societal relevance, there is an emerging need for novel opto-electronic materials with higher conversion efficiency and lower production cost. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are promising high-performance semiconductors due to their strong absorption and emission in a broad spectral range and their ease of manufacturing. So far, integration in opto-electronic devices was hampered by inherent stability issues such as the degradation from the optically active “black” phase into an inactive phase. In this project, we explore a fundamentally new route to stabilize the black phase under ambient conditions. The role of the PhD student is to develop and apply novel low-dose electron microscopy techniques and perform a quantitative analysis of the obtained data.
