2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Surgical Robotics

Summary of PhD Program:

Minimally invasive surgery has revolutionized medicine by enabling interventions without large incisions, thereby significantly improving clinical outcomes. Such surgical techniques include insertions of needles, catheters, and micro-robots. For effective medical diagnosis and treatment, the device must reach its intended target. In order to increase the targeting accuracy of the procedure and improve clinical outcomes, the goal of this research project is to develop methods for modeling and controlling a range soft/flexible surgical devices and medical microrobots, as they interact and navigate through the body.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in characterization of photo-catalytic nanoparticles

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD student you will develop and use AFM-based spectroscopy to nanoscopically characterize the interfaces between electrolyte, semiconductor- and cocatalyst-nanoparticles under photocatalytic operating conditions (e. g. in liquid, under applied bias and illumination) and to establish surface property-catalytic activity correlations. Atomic scale surface structure, charge density, hydration state and morphology are assessed using amplitude modulation AFM. To elucidate the catalytic performance at the nanoscale, conductive and electrochemical AFM will be used.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Artificial Microswimmers: Unravelling 3D Real-Space Dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

We are happy to announce a fully funded Ph.D. position in the cutting-edge field of active soft matter, focusing on developing artificial microswimmers capable of autonomous motion and transport in 3D. We are looking for a highly motivated and curiosity-driven person who enjoys conceptual thinking and is passionate about learning new concepts and doing original research.

Autonomous motion, activity, and transport of microorganisms in fluids are the hallmark features of living systems. In recent years, this has fueled an emerging new research field, namely ‘’active or autonomous matter,” focused on designing synthetic microswimmers with unique capabilities such as self-propulsion, assembling themselves, and response to local environments [1,2]. However, creating micron-sized artificial building blocks that can swim autonomously in 3D is challenging.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Advanced Bioadhesives for Lung Tissue

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of the presently available PhD-position is to develop and incorporate various lung adhesive moieties onto crosslinkable polymer backbones and perform analytical, rheological, tissue adhesive, and cytocompatibility studies on the resulting materials. After lead candidate selection, you will collaborate with a cell biologist from University Medical Centre Groningen to determine preclinical performance of the resulting adhesive biomaterial. You will therefore work on the multidisciplinary interface of polymer chemistry, materials science, tissue engineering, and minimally invasive lung treatment.

7. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Dutch NWA-ORC project

Summary of PhD Program:

The two PhD positions include:

PhD position 1: This PhD position will focus on the load pattern investigation by means of measuring movements of the users. Specifically, the PhD researcher will work towards minimizing the required number of inertial measurement units (IMUs) to obtain insights in both the kinematics and kinetics of the user. The relation between kinematics and kinetics is very important to improve the daily life functioning of OA patients. The goal is to estimate knee loading using IMUs by developing individual models based on biomechanical principles. Additionally, the PhD researcher will work towards a feedback application to minimize such loads to decrease the disease progression.

PhD position 2: This PhD position will focus on the daily monitoring of the integrated factors across load patterns, physical fitness, and psychosocial factors. Specifically, the PhD researcher will develop multimodal human signal and system fusion algorithms to track the health condition and psychosocial factors of individuals with osteoarthritis using different modal physiological signals, such as inertial measurement unit (IMU), electrocardiography (ECG), photoplethysmogram (PPG), and Electrodermal activity (EDA) signals, to answer the questions, such as, why someone (does not) start exercising, or (does not) stop exercising, as well as providing relevant inputs of a recommender system for coaching. The PhD researcher will apply and develop techniques, including multimodal and multidimensional signal processing, human physiological dynamic systems, and machine learning techniques.
