1. Postdoctoral Position in riparian network biodiversity conservation
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Europe has committed to upscale nature protection to include 30% of land and sea, but due to historical overexploitation of natural assets, the area that is available for protection is limited. Borders between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, i.e., riparian zones, contribute disproportionately to regional biodiversity and delivery of ecosystem functions and services. Because of this and their branching geometry, riparian networks form systems of ‘green-blue arteries’, which spatially connect multiple ecosystems, despite representing relatively small areas. In this international project (RIPARIANET), we aim to develop approaches that optimise the spatial conservation prioritisation of stream-riparian networks, by investigating a range of riparian processes and functions and biodiversity measures, and by performing field studies as well as by using remote sensing information.

3. Postdoctoral Position in photosynthesis
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The project is part of the project ”Trees that grow better” financed by the Swedish foundation for strategic research (SSF). The goal is to understand the mechanisms for regulation of photosynthetic light harvesting, and to modify it aiming to increase growth. You will mainly work with aspens where the amounts of different photosynthetic proteins have been modified using CRISPR or ”traditional biotechnology”. These will be analyzed in the lab, in our “phenotyping facility” and in the field using advanced techniques, including measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence and growth. Some research may also be performed on other plant species (Arabidopsis or spruce). The work will utilize the UPSC technical platforms and other persons involved in the project.
Application Deadline: 2023-04-30
4. Postdoctoral Position in visualisation and learning
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The position is at the Department of Science and Mathematics Education (NMD) at Umeå University. The research will be conducted largely at the Curiosum science center at Umeå University. As a research environment, in addition to NMD and Curiosum, the Department of Physics and EISCAT’s headquarters in Kiruna (located at the Institute for Space Physics) will also contribute. Together they form a stimulating and international research environment. At the NMD, teaching and research is conducted around learning in natural sciences, technology and mathematics (UmSER).

5. Postdoctoral Position in pain and neurobiology
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The aim of the project is to investigate whether stress and anxiety affect pain experiences and whether this is associated with neurochemical levels in the brain. Spectroscopy will be used to measure selected neurotransmitters (GABA and glutamate) in 2 pain-related brain regions. The project is interdisciplinary, including researchers with expertise in several fields and in collaboration with Umeå center for Functional Brain Imaging (umu.se).
Application Deadline: 2023-04-30
6. Postdoctoral Position in Language Studies
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
As a postdoctoral fellow, you are expected to conduct your own individually designed project, including publications and engagement with the surrounding community. You will also participate in the development of the subject’s research environment, for example through participation in seminars, research networks and [RW1] gatherings. You are also expected to attend other meetings and gatherings at the department, such as workplace meetings and staff days. The position includes teaching up to a maximum of twenty percent of the total working time.

9. Postdoctoral Position in eye research
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
In the mammalian eye, the iris sphincter muscle regulates the size of the pupil, which in turn controls the influx of light to the retina. Traditionally, the pupillary light reflex (PLR) has been considered a brain-mediated reflex. More recent data from animal studies show that the iris can intrinsically respond to light to regulate the PLR independent of signals from the brain. Our recent publication has presented new mechanisms regulating, among others, synchronized pupil dilation and contraction in mouse (Sghari et al., 2020), but more details remain to be defined. Thus, the main focus of this project is to understand molecular mechanisms that control light dependent regulation of the PLR, but also other eye related mechanisms and its possible relation to eye diseases are of interest to understand.

10. Postdoctoral Position in Design and AI
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The UmArts Research Centre is leading research in Art, Architecture, Design and Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Umeå University (UmU) in northern Sweden in partnership with the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program – Humanities and Society (WASP-HS) and UmU’s Centre for Transdisciplinary AI (TAIGA). In 2023, curator Sarah Cook will join UmArts as the WASP-HS Guest Professor in partnership with Bildmuseet, Umeå School of Architecture (UMA), Umeå Institute of Design (UID) and the University of Glasgow.
Application Deadline: 2023-04-10
11. Postdoctoral Position in Architecture and AI
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The WASP-HS Guest Professorship project Art and AI explores how arts research can contribute to the social and ethical discourses of AI and machine learning. The project involves working in partnership with museums and galleries, artists and curators to critically interrogate the aesthetics and politics of AI, collaborating with and challenging the algorithmic logic underpinning hardware and software development. We are interested in how creative encounters can allow publics to experience and engage with the ethical considerations and societal shifts that widespread use of AI will bring and feeding that back into AI development.
Application Deadline: 2023-04-10
12. Postdoctoral Position in immunology and infection
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in our ongoing efforts to improve the understanding of the human adaptive immune response to infection and the protective effect of vaccination. We do this by cellular, molecular, and genetic characterization of cells and tissues from rationally selected patient groups. Depending on the interest and background of the successful candidate, the specific focus will be on (1) the genetics of B cell repertoire development through life, (2) the role of complement regulatory proteins for initiation of adaptive immunity in lymphoid organs or, (3) the impact of age on the cellular and genetic response to infection and vaccination.

13. Postdoctoral Position in genomics of historic coral bleaching
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Symbioses are prevalent across many biomes and can be critical to the biodiversity, productivity and survival of some of the most charismatic ecosystems on Earth. However, sometimes these symbioses break down. Whilst this may be survivable for the individual partners, it can lead to widespread death of both host and symbiont. Here we use coral reefs as a model system to empirically investigate symbiotic breakdown. The ecosystem services provided by coral reefs are worth over €78 billion annually and include coastline protection, tourism, food and medical derivatives. However, the health of corals can be significantly impacted by coral bleaching. Coral bleaching is the loss of symbiotic zooxanthellae (Symbiodiniaceae) from tropical corals and can be caused by stressors such as thermal perturbations, disease and freshwater runoff.
Application Deadline: 2023-03-31
14. Postdoctoral Position in educational measurement

In the subject of Educational Measurement, research on reliability and validity issues related to educational measurement is in focus. This can concern the quality of instruments such as tests, questionnaires or other types of scales and the interpretations and uses, or consequences of such instruments. It can also concern how individual differences influence test and school performances as well as behavior more generally. Both the Swedish Scholastic Assessment Test, the SweSAT, and National tests in Mathematics and Science are developed at the department of Applied Educational Science, and the postdoctoral fellow will preferably work with data linked to any of these tests, but other lines of research connected to educational- and performance measurements are possible.
