A postdoctoral fellowship is available to study the molecular basis of how HIV and other virus-encoded proteins hijack the centrosome duplication machinery and induce aneuploidy that can lead to carcinogenesis. We are a diverse team of scientists, who are fascinated by research centering around the post-translational modifier ubiquitin and how it regulates developmental cell-fate decisions. By combining human genetic and pluripotent stem cell approaches with biochemical, biophysical, and proteomic methods, we are studying the functions and mechanisms of particular ubiquitylation enzymes during different aspects of human development. The Cao group studies the molecular and pathological mechanisms of human diseases particularly diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) with the goal of finding effective therapies. In recent years, the lab has developed wet-lab and computational approaches to identify and functionally characterize disease-associated long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). The lab is among the first to demonstrate the importance of lncRNAs in glucose and lipid metabolism in mice (Cell Metabolism, 2016, Cell Reports, 2016 and Cell Metabolism, 2015). As most human lncRNAs are non-conserved, the lab has recently developed two pipelines leveraging the information of genome-wide association studies (Nature Communications, 2020) and clinical studies of metabolic disorders (JCI, 2021) to systematically identify disease-relevant human lncRNAs, and has also defined the pathological role of selected human lncRNAs using a liver-specific humanized mouse model.

The Le Pichon laboratory at the National Institutes of Health is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow for fully funded research to study the cell biology of neuronal injury in human iPSC-derived neurons. Our laboratory combines cell biological and mouse modeling approaches to understand axon injury responses, their role in disease, and to develop therapeutic approaches. We are interested in how neuron types differentially respond to injury, for example, peripheral neurons have an intrinsic ability to regenerate their axons, unlike the axon degeneration commonly observed in many CNS neurons. While most proteins that integrate into biological membranes contain α-helical membrane spanning segments, OMPs contain a folded “β barrel” structure that serves as a membrane anchor. Although an essential heterooligomer called the barrel assembly machinery (Bam) complex has been shown to catalyze the membrane insertion of OMPs, its mechanism of action is unknown.
