1. 16 Fully Funded PhD Position in Digital Waters (DIWA) doctoral pilot

Summary of PhD Program:

The Digital Waters (DIWA) doctoral pilot, the University of Turku, is inviting applications for 16 fixed-term doctoral researcher positions at the Department of Geography and Geology and Department of Computing (disciplines Geography, Geology, Water Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Science and other applicable fields in the mathematical, scientific and technological fields). 14 fixed-term doctoral researcher positions are open in spring call: March 15 – April 15, 2024. The autumn call will be organised in August 2024. The expected starting date in the position is at the latest on 1st of January 2025 and the duration of the position is three years.

DIWA doctoral pilot positions funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Doctoral Researcher Position research themes are linked to DIWA Flagship funded by Research Council of Finland. The DIWA flagship is a leading research and innovation ecosystem, developing research excellence to support decision-making and pave the way for the next re-evolution in the water sector – digitally. DIWA enables a transition towards the digital representation of real-world water systems (Digital Twin) to reproduce hydrological storages, their states, fluxes and processes, as well as ecosystem responses with novel options for improved scenario analyses, planning and governance.

2. 4-9 Fully Funded PhD Position in EDUCA-Doc doctoral education pilot (multiple disciplines)

Summary of PhD Program:

We are now looking for doctoral researchers for a three-year fixed-term contract, funded by the national EDUCA-doctoral education pilot. If the applicant does not have the right to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Turku, they must apply for the right to study for a doctoral degree during the 2024 application periods via the Studyinfo.fi -service. Doctoral researchers for this position must be studying for a doctoral degree in the Faculty of Science (EXACTUS) or the Faculty of Technology (DPT).

The position cannot be filled by an individual who has already completed a doctoral degree or has been granted the right to study for a doctoral degree before November 1, 2023. The doctoral researcher position requires residence in Finland.

3. 4-9 Fully Funded PhD Position in Education for the Future

Summary of PhD Program:

The position starts on 1.8.2024 (or 1.1.2025) and lasts for three years. The doctoral researcher’s tasks include conducting their own doctoral research and completing doctoral courses. In addition, the position may involve other tasks related to the EDUCA programme. The target time for completing a doctoral degree is three years.
The main themes of the EDUCA-doc programme are:

1) Educational experiments, reforms, and interventions (especially educational policy reforms and the impact of RCT interventions),
2) Variation in learning and support for learning (individual, group, kindergarten/school, municipal, and regional perspectives),
3) Scalable digital solutions for learning and teaching (especially variations in learning and learning analytics to support learning during early childhood education and compulsory education),
4) Strengthening the competence of teachers and principals (related to the above themes), and
5) Data infrastructure as part of the EDUCA ecosystem.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Qualitative Research

Summary of PhD Program:

The appointed researcher will be joining the DIGIPARENT-project’s qualitative work package (WP). The project examines the implementation of early psychosocial interventions for children, youth and families in social and health care services. The WP examines the planning, decision-making and implementation of interventions on different levels of welfare services areas (counties). Questions related to the quality, sustainability and targeting of the interventions are also evaluated during the study.

The main methodology in carrying out the study is interviewing (incl. of decision makers, coordinators and those working in welfare services areas (counties), healthcare professionals and customers). In addition, the position includes doing your own dissertation research and completing courses related to doctoral studies.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Epidemiological Research

Summary of PhD Program:

The appointed researcher will be joining the DIGIPARENT project, which explores the use of digitally assisted parent training interventions in the prevention and treatment of disruptive behaviour disorders. The project is divided into four Work Packages (WPs), which are focused on

1) long-term outcomes of digitally assisted parent training,
2) genetic and epigenetic variants associated with childhood disruptive behaviour and the epigenetic response to childhood psychosocial interventions,
3) personalisation by artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, and
4) functionality as part of the health service system.
The project is funded by European Research Council (ERC). In addition, the position includes doing your own dissertation research and completing courses related to doctoral studies.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics and Astronomy 

Summary of PhD Program:

According to the University of Turku rules of procedure, a person selected for the post of doctoral researcher is required to have a study right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Turku. In addition, when acquiring their degree or otherwise, they are required to have demonstrated the ability to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan. In this position, the study right of the Doctoral Researcher is required to be within the Doctoral Programme in Exact Sciences (EXACTUS).
