1. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

The IMPRS-LM brings together scientists with different backgrounds to investigate one of the most fundamental questions in biology: how do cells turn complex biochemical signals into meaningful responses? Cells must respond to a vast array of stimuli, but how do they build these responses, how do macromolecular complexes operate to determining cellular behaviour? By understanding these complex processes at a molecular level, we can gain insights into the intricate mechanisms that govern life itself.

2. 05 Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular and Chemical Ecology and Evolution

Summary of PhD Program:

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) “Chemical Communication in Ecological Systems” in Jena, Germany, invites applications for 5 PhD positions beginning in September 2025 – January 2026. The overarching research topic is the use of molecular, chemical and neurobiological techniques to experimentally explore ecological interactions under natural conditions. The main focus is on the relationship between plants, microbes and herbivores, and their environment, as well as the evolutionary and behavioral consequences of these interactions. We offer 8 exciting projects focusing on different organisms and approaches.

3. 05 Fully Funded PhD Position in Physical Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The International Max Planck Research School for Elementary Processes in Physical Chemistry (IMPRS-EPPC) at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society offers 5 PhD Positions in Physical Chemistry. The Fritz Haber Institute (FHI) in Berlin-Dahlem is one of the oldest and renowned research institutes within the Max Planck Society (MPG), Germany’s most successful scientific organization for fundamental research. At the FHI, researchers from all over the world are engaged in basic research in the field of chemical physics at interfaces and surfaces, catalysis research and molecular physics.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Evolution of Polygenic Traits

Summary of PhD Program:

The genetic architecture of quantitative traits identified by QTL and GWA studies includes all contributing alleles and their effect sizes. However‚ only a subset of the underlying alleles respond to selection; these alleles constitute the adaptive architecture (1). Factors such as distance to the new trait optimum‚ initial allele frequencies‚ and pleiotropy determine which alleles are potentially adaptive. The aim of this doctoral project is to compare the genetic and adaptive architectures of a polygenic trait‚ female body size in Drosophila simulans. We will determine the genetic architecture of female body size using GWAS.

5. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational protein design

Summary of PhD Program:

The global energy crisis calls for sustainable solutions to harness solar energy. The Bunzel group combines computational protein design and directed evolution to develop enzymes for solar-energy conversion (e.g., Bunzel et al., bioRxiv 2022). Building on this initial success, PhD positions I & II will focus on equipping natural redox enzymes with photocatalytic activity, creating new enzymes for solar-driven carbon capture and nitrogen fixation.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Evolutionary Developmental Biologist

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking an evolutionary and/or developmental biologist with a solid empirical background and methodological skillset and a keen interest in addressing fundamental questions in contemporary Evo-Devo. You will collaborate with an international team of experimental and computational biologists to explore the evolution of craniofacial development. The body compartment that has acquired the highest degree of morphological diversity in vertebrates is the head and particularly the face. Today’’s spectrum of vertebrate craniofacial shapes reflects evolutionary adaptations to the environment, the development of distinct feeding strategies, communication, and other specialized functions.
