8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Lunar South Pole Landing Sites: Analogue Mineralogy and ISRU
Summary of PhD Program:
In this PhD studentship, we will prepare mineralogical analogues for likely south pole landing sites. The synthesised analogues will be measured for thermal conductivity in ice-bearing samples, over a range of appropriate temperatures and ice sublimation loss rates to mimic the lunar environment. The results from these experiments, will improve thermal models to predict likely depths of water ice preservation. In tandem with this, the student will identify and study the mineralogy of lunar meteorites and Apollo samples analogous to the South Pole Aitken Basin.
Application Deadline: 31 January 2025
9. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
TARGET is the Training and Research Group for Energy Transition Mineral Resources, and UKRI-NERC sponsored Centre for Doctoral Training. TARGET is led by the University of Leicester, with a large number of University and industry partners. TARGET will support the training and development of researchers engaged in the challenge of meeting the changing patterns of resource demand. As we move away from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, and as the technology we use at home and at work evolves, we need greater amounts, and an increasingly diverse list of metals and minerals. Many of the materials we need are critical, with significant risk of disruption to their supply.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Advanced Characterisation and Modelling of Materials for Hydrogen Energy Systems
Summary of PhD Program:
Addressing climate change, protecting nature, and conserving resources are essential for improving our planet’s health. Hydrogen, as a low-carbon energy solution, plays a crucial role in supporting decarbonisation efforts by providing a green, versatile alternative across power, heat, and transport sectors. However, in metallic systems, hydrogen embrittlement and accelerated fatigue failure pose significant challenges, as hydrogen exposure can reduce ductility, strength, toughness, and fatigue life, leading to premature failures in critical infrastructure. Understanding and mitigating these effects on metallic materials are vital for developing reliable hydrogen-based systems.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Leveraging single-nucleus RNA sequencing data to dissect mechanisms of polyglutamine toxicity in Huntington’s disease
Summary of PhD Program:
The project will focus on the characteristics shared by triplet repeat disease transcriptional dysregulation in the MSNs and attempt to deeply understand the apparent loss of cell identity genes. For example, is the loss of cell identity unique to polyQ toxicity or a transcriptional program commonly seen in neurons facing cell demise? The fraction of transcriptional responses in MSNs not shared between SCA1 and HD brains would also give insights into understanding what separates the two diseases that gives rise to distinct clinical features.
