1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human Geography

Summary of PhD Program:

Are you interested in the geographies of health inequality between the ‘North’ and ‘South’ of England? There are deep-rooted and long-term regional health inequalities across England, with a two-year gap between the north and the south in how long people are expected to live. However, despite the size of the ‘north-south health divide’, we know little about how regional health inequalities have developed over time, what causes them, and how people experience, represent and perceive them.

This PhD opportunity will address the mobility aspects of this vital issue from a quantitative perspective. There is so much that we still have to make sense of in terms of England’s stark geographies of health inequality and how these relate to scholarship on health selection, social causation, meritocracy, socio-spatial mobility and social class more generally.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing

Summary of PhD Program:

Prompt reaction to an interesting event is a critical feature for any embedded system for safe and reliable interaction with the environment. Computer vision, which plays a significant role in such interaction processes, requires higher level scene understanding with ultra-fast processing capabilities operating at extremely low power. Current vision systems often use compute intensive approaches and are prone to fail in environments with limited power, bandwidth and computing resources, e.g., drones, or edge computing sensors.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing

Summary of PhD Program:

Interested in the intersection between systems biology and engineering biology? This PhD will explore the effect of synthetic manipulation on cellular systems. Engineering biology routinely produces proteins in bacteria which are not their natural host. Little work has investigated the systems-level, long-term effects of these new proteins on the cell. Computational approaches can be used to identify patterns of interactome rewiring, and allow these effects to be investigated, and potentially predicted.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer Science: Deep Learning and Foundation Models

Summary of PhD Program:

A unique studentship opportunity to join a team with a world-class reputation is offered by the School of Computing, Newcastle University. You will work on Deep Learning and Foundation Models in this fully funded PhD project. The project expects you to work on Deep Neural Networks focusing on Adversarial Deep Learning and Self Supervised Learning. Self-supervised learning, the so-called Dark Matter of Intelligence, is the future of AI. In this project, a novel deep neural network architecture design will take inspiration from neuroscience and complex network fields to solve computer vision tasks such as scene understanding in autonomous vehicles (AV) and self-driving cars using large vision models. Scene understanding using deep learning remains an open challenge, and we aim to solve a few challenging computer vision problems.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer Science Visualization

Summary of PhD Program:

Temporal networks, where each edge or node of the graph has its own individual timestamp, has become more prevalent from social media, contact tracing, and cybersecurity. In a social media setting, we would like to understand patterns in the posting behaviour across time and space. In a contact tracing scenario, we want to understand how a disease spreads in an epidemiological context and what policies are effective against it. In a cybersecurity scenario we may want to understand normal and abnormal connections patterns to a system. In all cases, understanding and visualizing temporal networks is critical.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

In this proposal, we will identify a technological route to transform methane producing AD plants into hydrogen producing AD plants using a novel electrochemical fermentation process. For this, we will explore the development of a novel reactor configuration that can be retrofitted in anaerobic digestion facilities. The student will conduct experimental investigations to determine a protocol for microbial communities’ enrichment, and electrochemical potentials needed to drive hydrogen production. A life cycle assessment of the technology will be developed throughout the experimental research to ensure improvements lead into considerable CO2 reductions and the provision of hydrogen within a circular bioeconomy framework.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Hybrid approaches seek to combine data-driven modelling, which are more readily incorporated into plant diagnostic and control systems, with the basic physical laws. Existing data-driven approaches are not constrained by conservation laws, so can predict impossible situations and are not robust on extrapolation. Existing fundamental models are complex and often ill-constrained, time consuming to develop, and cannot be transferred between processes. Hybrid models can be developed to a complexity appropriate to data available.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Agriculture

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD will analyse the impact of the monetisation of biodiversity, such as Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), on tree planting and maintenance decisions in non-woodland contexts such as along infrastructural linear features, on brownfield sites and as part of development. Environmental and soil testing will be used to estimate trees survival, resilience and growth potential.

BNG is a new policy that aims to embed biodiversity uplift in development and creates a market “price” for biodiversity. It uses the Biodiversity Metric which is based on the use of habitat area, condition and distinctiveness as a proxy for biodiversity. However, the monetisation of biodiversity has the potential to create perverse incentives, including for tree health and survival.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The Ph.D. project aims to test the current pipeline steels under service in pure hydrogen conditions and build a material database for industrial use. A multiscale, predictive model for engineering assessment of hydrogen induced failure will also be developed to facilitate the limited state-based design of hydrogen pipelines. These databases and models will support the new microstructure development with excellent properties for hydrogen storage to restrict hydrogen diffusion and permeation, which is the critical technology to increase hydrogen resistance. The outcomes of the project will facilitate the design of the next generation of pipeline steels for pure hydrogen transmission. This project is supported by TATA, Liberty Steel, and Uppsala University.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Nominally 50% of the total energy consumption of a commercial aircraft is due to the turbulence flowing over every surface of the moving vehicle. Taming the turbulence with intelligent sensing and actuation technologies reduces the vehicle’s energy consumption , which in turn reduces transport emissions, leading to vast economic savings and wider health and environmental benefits through improved air quality. Just a 3% reduction in the turbulent forces acting on a long-range commercial aircraft would save £1.2M in jet fuel per aircraft per year and prevent the annual release of 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2).

20. Fully Funded PhD Position in Leveraging genetic models of skin barrier dysfunction to gain insights into cutaneous inflammation

Summary of PhD Program:

Ichthyoses are genetic disorders of the skin barrier causing life-long dry scaly skin, with associated inflammation in severely affected children. Driven by single gene disorders, study of ichthyosis patient’s skin samples can offer mechanistic insight into how different barrier gene defects drive cutaneous inflammation. This project aims to model selected ichthyoses using gene editing combined with the development of skin equivalent models that incorporate macrophages, with the aim of functionally testing novel insights from the MRF project single cell and spatial transcriptomic analysis of ichthyosis patient skin. In addition, it has recently been shown that the cutaneous microbiome is altered in the ichthyosis patients studied in this project, and there is the opportunity to investigate the role of microbiome in driving inflammation by manipulation in the proposed skin equivalent models
