3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex is offering one PhD research Studentship for an exceptional student, starting in October 2024 studying PhD Computer Science or PhD Electronic Systems.

The student will work on the project entitled “Waveform Design for Integrated Sensing, Localization, and Communications (ISLAC) in 6G” under the supervision of Dr Zilong Liu. The project aims for a systematic investigation on analysis, design, and evaluation of enhanced ISLAC waveforms. Specifically, we will exploit a number of multicarrier waveforms (e.g., OTFS, OCDM, OFDM, DFT-spread-OFDM) to design novel ISLAC systems. Starting from the 5G New Radio framework, we will further optimize the multicarrier waveforms to improve the sensing and localization performances.

4. 06 Fully Funded PhD Position in Nature protection versus nature restoration: Who benefits and who loses out?

Summary of PhD Program:

This is an opportunity to conduct fully funded interdisciplinary research under the Sustainable Transitions Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme at the University of Essex. Decisions around whether to use limited conservation funding to protect “good” ecosystems or improve degraded ones are typically based upon economic and ecological considerations alone.

Yet there are numerous potential ways in which this decision not only determines the costs and ecological benefits of conservation activities, but also the social outcomes. For example, in Europe and North America, nature protection almost certainly involves a greater focus on predominantly white rural populations and relatively affluent suburban areas. Cash for conservation in urban areas has the potential to benefit a wider diversity of the population.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in The scourge of plastic waste: Analysing issues of sustainability and accountability

Summary of PhD Program:

This is an opportunity to conduct fully funded interdisciplinary research under the Sustainable Transitions Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme at the University of Essex. The aim of the project is to explore (i) the global plastic waste business to better understand the trade, policy and regulatory gaps, and (ii) the issue of sustainability and accountability related to the plastic waste trade.

Plastic products are everywhere in our global economy, including as waste. As a result of the cheap labour costs and weak environmental regulations, a large proportion of plastic waste generated in the Western world is being exported to poorer developing countries for recycling, and the trend in plastic waste trade is continuing to increase (Basel Action Network, 2023). The presence of non-recyclable plastic components, mismanagement of waste and the weak regulatory environment in developing countries are just some of the reasons why millions of tons of plastic waste have ended up in landfill sites, and the natural environment, including the oceans.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sustainable transition to nature-based solutions for coastal defence

Summary of PhD Program:

This is an opportunity to conduct fully funded interdisciplinary research under the Sustainable Transitions Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme at the University of Essex. Coastal communities must rapidly adapt to the effects of sea-level rise. Nature-based solutions can assist with achieving a sustainable transition of coastal defence.

Essex estuaries have a cultural heritage tied to oysters dating back to Roman times, but native oyster beds are now one of the most threatened marine habitats in Europe and have been controversially substituted by the introduced Pacific oyster in the 1960s. This project explores the potential of oyster reefs within Essex estuaries to function as a natural breakwater, dissipating wave energy, slowing coastal erosion, and reducing storm damage. Oyster reefs benefit the natural environment and economy by enhancing water quality through filtration and providing habitats to support commercially important fisheries.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental loss, ecological grief and reparative action

Summary of PhD Program:

This is an opportunity to conduct fully funded interdisciplinary research under the Sustainable Transitions Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme at the University of Essex. Biodiversity indicators have revealed dramatic declines in the relative abundance of wildlife around the world, with particularly large losses in freshwater habitats and amongst larger bodied organisms.

This scientific evidence has informed research in the humanities and social sciences on the emotional dimensions of environmental change and environmental loss. This has included a reflection on how human communities have responded to species extinction, loss of biodiversity and landscape degradation. These noticed losses have an emotional toll on people, generating mourning and ecological grief.

8. 06 Fully Funded PhD Position in Human rights in postgrowth proposals and policies

Summary of PhD Program:

This is an opportunity to conduct fully funded interdisciplinary research under the Sustainable Transitions Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme at the University of Essex. Amidst concern that the prevailing ‘green growth’ model advanced under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will not avert climate, ecological and socioeconomic crises, increasing attention is being given to alternative post-growth and growth-agnostic policy approaches at a wide range of governmental and institutional levels.

Research on the relationships between human rights and post- growth proposals such as degrowth or doughnut economics – in theory and practice – is in its infancy. This research project would develop the understanding of obstacles and opportunities to centre human rights in postgrowth approaches as a normative and legal foundation, to protect dignity and well-being and against the abuse of power.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Climate misinformation

Summary of PhD Program:

This is an opportunity to conduct fully funded interdisciplinary research under the Sustainable Transitions Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme at the University of Essex. With the substantial influence of social media and online information platforms, there has been a notable surge in the rapidity, frequency and volume of information dissemination. This proliferation often comes at the cost of information quality. This issue is pronounced in climate and sustainability, where conflicting viewpoints and vested interests frequently give rise to misinformation.

What motivates the spread of climate misinformation, and its resultant effects, remains to be seen. Is it a deliberate strategy, or does it stem from unintentional misinformation? This project explores climate misinformation and its repercussions on public opinion. The primary objective is to investigate the multifaceted actors involved, including businesses, governments, and media outlets, and their role in perpetuating climate misinformation. Additionally, the study aims to discern how such misinformation shapes people’s preferences and attitudes concerning environmental policy.

Fully Funded PhD Position in How to enhance climate governance to achieve effective funding for ‘loss and damage’ at the local level

Summary of PhD Program:

This is an opportunity to conduct fully funded interdisciplinary research under the Sustainable Transitions Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme at the University of Essex. The project will focus on the exploration of solutions to aspects of the development of ‘loss and damange’ climate funding and support at the local level. Supervision for this project will be led by Essex Business School with secondary supervision from Essex Law School.

The efforts to establish ‘loss and damage’ climate funding to aid countries impacted by climate disasters underscore the need for collective approaches to transform financial institutions and governmental practices to ensure that support meets local needs. Structural challenges such as resource distribution, access to finance, corruption, multilevel governance systems and participation in decision-making can all complicate ‘loss and damage’ implementation for disadvantaged or vulnerable communities at the local level.

11. 06 Fully Funded PhD Position in Managing the environmental impact of antifouling biocides in recreational marinas through stakeholder engagement

Summary of PhD Program:

This is an opportunity to conduct fully funded interdisciplinary research under the Sustainable Transitions Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme at the University of Essex. Antifouling coatings protect vessels from marine biofouling (growth on the hull), which would otherwise increase fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. However, most antifouling coatings contain toxins that are released into the environment.

While commercial vessels conform to strict rules, recreational boats are less regulated with regard to fouling-control practices. This project will work with local stakeholders to understand the release, environmental fate and impact of antifouling biocides from small craft using a combination of fieldwork, laboratory assays and human behavioural science. Best- practice guidelines will then be developed through stakeholder collaboration.
