1. Fully Funded PhD Position in complex textile materials
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a PhD student for a research project on textile modelling. In this project, the main purpose is to develop a multi-scale textile modelling framework that allows accurate simulation of textile manufacturing processes such as yarn unwinding from a bobbin, weft insertion during weaving, stitching and tufting. This framework is implemented using finite element modelling as well as virtual fibre modelling. Big challenges here are the high anisotropy, low bending stiffness and non-linear behaviour of most textile materials, as well as the dynamics of manufacturing systems as most production happens at very high speeds. Moreover, the approach should entail both kinematics as well as mechanics such that predictive simulations of textile manufacturing can be made. This is still a very new research topic and many scientific questions remain unanswered. The PhD researcher will be part of a team of 4 researchers (3 PhD students and one postdoctoral researcher) who will all work on this large research project.
Application Deadline: Sep 30, 2023

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biotechnology
Summary of PhD Program:
We are offering a PhD scholarship to unravel the molecular-genetic mechanisms that shape herbivory and reproduction in insects and mites. Arthropods are associated with a diverse set of bacteria. Certain intracellular bacteria infect the reproductive tissues of their arthropod host and spread rapidly through host populations by manipulating reproduction. Symbiont-mediated reproductive phenotypes will be a major focus of this PhD scholarship. Bacteria can further influence the evolution and ecology of arthropods by facilitating novel feeding ecologies, such as herbivory. Bacteria promote arthropod herbivory by horizontal gene transfer, or by initiating a long-term symbiotic relationship. This project will contribute to resolving the enigmatic genetic, molecular, and biochemical mechanisms that shape these host-symbiont interactions, with an emphasis on haplodiploid arthropods.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electronics and Information Systems
Summary of PhD Program:
In the PASTIME project, we will search for methodologies to study the kinetics of drug transport. Since experiments often are too expensive or lack sufficient detail, molecular simulations can give insight in the dynamics of drug binding to proteins, or the permeation kinetics of those drug molecules through membranes. While such computational methodologies exist, new fundamental developments are needed to understand the ‘time’ aspects and to make the computations feasible with present-day computer power.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Information Technology
Summary of PhD Program:
As a group, we have been active in this field for over 10 years, both at the simulation level and at the experimental level. E.g., we were the first to fabricate silicon photonics chips based on reservoir computing (a variant of recurrent neural networks) [Vandoorne et al., Nature Communications 5 3541, 2014]. We also used neuromorphic chips to show the experimental realisation of nonlinear dispersion compensation in a directly-modulated telecom link [S. Sackesyn et al., Optics Express, 29, 20, 30991, 2021]. Recently, we used neuromorphic principles to speed up the classification of different particles in flow cytometry [M. Gouda et al., JSTQE, 29, 2, 7600608, 2023].
Application Deadline: Aug 01, 2023
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bioscience Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
Plant tissue culture and regeneration is used to propagate selected plant material, to create transgenic crops, to preserve species and varieties, and to rescue or select unique genotypes for breeding. While this method works well from some crops, many plant species and varieties are rather difficult to regenerate. Researchers vary the media composition and hormones to obtain a successful protocol. However, environmental factors such as temperature are also important. In recent years it has been shown that high temperature conditions can improve the efficiency of plant regeneration. We want to know how heat stress regimes increase the competence of callus to regenerate. In this project, we investigate HEAT SHOCK FACTORS (HSF) transcription factors and how they are involved in shoot regeneration from callus.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematical Modelling
Summary of PhD Program:
The water sector is under increasing pressure worldwide. To ensure water security and sustainable development, major paradigm shifts are in progress. A first important shift is the transition towards a circular water and resource economy. This transition is inherently a multidisciplinary and multi-objective effort that implies bridging historical silo’s (for example drinking water, wastewater, hydrology for rainwater harvesting, agriculture, industry). The second paradigm shift is the digital transformation and the emergence of powerful and automated model simulations that support real-time smart decision making.
Application Deadline: Aug 31, 2023
18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environment
Summary of PhD Program:
Soil biology is the new frontier in environmental sciences, and received overwhelming and ever increasing attention in recent years, but despite the rapidly evolving knowledge on soil biodiversity as such, its relation with crucial soil functions remains largely unexplored. The carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles in soil are tightly coupled and determine crucial processes with respect to agricultural production (e.g. N availability) and to environmental problems (N leaching losses, emissions of the greenhouse gases CO2, N2O and CH4, C sequestration, …). It has been frequently suggested that soil microfauna (nematodes, protists) play a very important part in C and N cycling, but research in this field has largely ignored the role of microfauna and their interactions with plant roots, bacteria and fungi, mostly as a result of the phenomenal methodological challenges in this type of research.

In the past years, the research group in Kortrijk has built up critical expertise and laboratory infrastructure to support this PhD.
Application Deadline: Aug 25, 2023
21. Fully Funded PhD Position in Plants and Crops
Summary of PhD Program:
Heat waves have become a common occurrence that is seriously affecting the production of seeds and fruits, and in general agricultural productivity. Even very short periods of high temperatures during sexual reproduction have already a devastating impact. Why in particular the process of meiosis and gamete development are highly sensitive to heat is an important unanswered question in plant biology. Horticell investigates the underlying molecular processes that are the cause for heat inflicted loss of fertility, and in this context, we identified several genetic factors involved. The proposed PhD project dives into the study of these genes with the aim to reveal how the reproductive system responds to heat stress and what signaling and repair pathways are being activated to mitigate the damage.
Application Deadline: Aug 01, 2023
22. Fully Funded PhD Position in Marketing, Innovation and Organisation
Summary of PhD Program:
The research group “Consumer Behavior” of the department Marketing, Innovation and Organization is looking for a motivated doctoral researcher to conduct research on “the belief in quantification.” The project starts from the idea that people differ in how much they believe that everything important in life is quantified or quantifiable (belief in quantification). This project aims (1) to develop a measurement instrument of that belief, (2) to examine several potential consequences of the belief in quantification, and (3) to investigate potential consequences of this belief in terms of specific choices consumers make. You will be supervised for this project by the professors Maggie Geuens (UGent) and Mario Pandelaere (Virginia Tech, VS and UGent).
