8. Fully Funded PhD Position in parasite immunopathology

Summary of PhD Program:

A PhD student position is available to study the immunoregulatory mechanisms underpinning alveolar echinococcosis (AE), which is caused by Echinococcus multilocularis (small fox tapeworm) and which represents the highest ranking foodborne parasitic zoonosis in Europe. AE is a neglected, but emerging liver disease of humans and other mammals. Current treatment of AE is limited, and the disease causes high medical, psychological and socio-economic burden. The parasite-modulated immune response induced upon E. multilocularis infection is coupled to disease outcome. However, parasite-specific factors responsible for host immunomodulation as well as patho-physiological mechanisms underlying AE are still elusive.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cardiac Electrophysiology

Summary of PhD Program:

With translational approaches and in close collaboration with clinicians, we aim to decipher the mechanisms underlying AF and its progression. To this end, we combine high-throughput molecular biology techniques such as transcriptomic, proteomic and lipidomic, with animal models (from transgenic mice to AF model of higher species) and state-of-the-art electrophysiological studies (in vitro and in vivo). The targets identified in this context will allow the development of innovative approaches for the treatment of AF by means of specific vectors (e.g. viruses, molecular compounds) targeting a defined cardiac cell population (precision medicine). Our ultimate goal is to offer new therapeutic options in terms of personalized medicine for the patient suffering from AF.
