2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Spectroscopy

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of the PhD project is to combine novel laser and interferometric THz cluster spectroscopic investigations with advanced quantum chemical modeling approaches in the exploration of the driving forces associated with fundamental (bio)molecular recognition mechanisms for organic molecules with functional groups representative for biological systems. The non-covalent intermolecular forces stabilizing weakly bound cluster molecules are much weaker than covalent bonds and the class of transitions associated with large-amplitude intermolecular vibrational motion introduced by molecular complexation is observed in the technologically challenging THz spectral region. THz spectral signatures of weakly bound cluster molecules will enable the characterization of intermolecular potential energy landscapes involved in the molecular recognition mechanisms with unprecedented accuracy and yield rigorous benchmarks for quantum chemical methodologies and molecular docking tools.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Catalytic Upgrading of Biomass Pyrolysis Oil

Summary of PhD Program:

Fast pyrolysis is a fairly simple and efficient way to convert solid biomass such as wood and agricultural waste to a liquid fuel in high yield. The liquid fuel however has adverse properties such as low heating value, low pH/high acidity and poor storage stability due to the high oxygen content. To obtain a high quality liquid fuel that can be used for heavy transport and aviation the oxygen must be removed by hydrotreating. A main challenge in standard hydrotreating of the pyrolysis oil is the poor thermal stability of the oil that leads to fast coking/deactivation of catalysts and plugging of the reactor. The aim of the PhD project is to develop a continuous catalytic process involving a stirred tank reactor that allows for un-interrupted production of oxygen-free high quality liquid hydrocarbon fuel.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in microalgae production for shellfish hatchery

Summary of PhD Program:

Your PhD project is integrated in the LTA BOOST project https://lta-boost.dtu.dk/en/ for which the overall goal is to develop Low Trophic species Aquaculture (LTA) in Danish waters. In your PhD project you will provide new tools and technologies to upscale cost-efficient and sustainable production of feed for shellfish in hatchery. Food production in shellfish hatchery represents up to 25-60% of the costs. Traditionally, mix of monoculture of few common microalgae species are produced to feed shellfish. However, shellfish performances in the hatchery suggest that monoculture mix lacks nutrients that could be provided by a diversified microalgal and bacterial community. Besides, stored broodstock in hatchery as well as recently produced spat in micronursery require large amount of food and low-cost technologies transferable to low-tech hatcheries.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Self-Configurable Devices for Oral Drug Delivery

Summary of PhD Program:

In the IDUN section at DTU Health Tech, we have explored novel devices that can increase the systemic uptake of e.g. peptide drugs by facilitating an intimate contact between the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and the intestinal epithelium. As an example, we have developed a self-unfolding elastomeric foil which can be triggered in the small intestine. In broader terms, self-configurable devices are characterized by their ability to change shape in order to facilitate close proximity between API and the intestinal epithelium. Such devices must be contained in the limited inner volume of size 00-000 capsules. Upon triggering in the small intestine or colon they must unfold or swell and mediate a substantial pressure against the intestinal lining.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Neuroimaging with Diffusion MRI

Summary of PhD Program:

Your main focus will be on developing biophysical models of the microscopic brain tissue composition (neurons, axons, myelin, and other microstructures). These models are formulas that predict the dMRI signal measured at each voxel. Once your model is applied to the measured signal, we can extract some relevant parameters like: how many axons and cells are there at a specific location? What are their sizes? Is there myelin covering axons or is it absent, perhaps due to disease? We can then pack back this information into several 3D images that would help a doctor formulate a diagnosis. To do so, not only does your model need to be capable of providing such information (linear/non-linear optimization? Deep/Machine learning regression?), but also you need to carefully plan how to acquire the data from the MRI scanner (the measured signal must be sensitive to these parameters in the first place).

25. Fully Funded PhD Position in Fish Ecology & Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

Movements and migrations are a fundamental aspect of the life history of many animals. In fish, this has often been regarded as an adaptive behaviour for increasing growth, survival, reproductive success, and hence overall fitness, but is notoriously difficult to study. This is especially true for highly migratory species such as salmonids and tunas. However, new advanced methods in biotelemetry, genomics, physiology and many other tools provide unprecedented insights and resolution on movements and migrations, particularly if these tools are combined. Migratory fish can also be somewhat more vulnerable to threats like climate change so these tools can also help us identify the ways and extent to which fish are vulnerable to stressors (e.g., catch-and-release, changes in temperature).
